OK... I'm stumped... I thought I had a slipping belt... The alternator belt was howlin something terrible... I took the old belt off.. nearly broken through... I put a new belt on and the problem seemed to cure it self... i did tighten it correctly...
Well the squeel is back... It is tight... I know it's the damn alternator... If I am at a light and roll my windows down, electric windows, the voltage guage dropd from 14 to 12 and the howel begins again... If I am driving down the road and I roll the windows down and hold the switches down... the howeling starts... If i start it on a cold morning, and turn the fan on too soon the howeling starts... it seems that the alternator is not doing something right... I wanna get some input before I put a new alternator in her... not wanting to spend the money... it's a easy 10 minute job but... I'm lazy...

Check pulley and belt alignment with your current set up to see if they are running true. If so, you got a alternator that is trying to give up the ghost. It's warning you and will fail when you need it most...dark foggy night in the backwoods...sounds like a Stephen King novel in the making.

i would have to say check the alignment of the pully's. But when you say it squeels under load my guess is that it could be the bearings in the alternator (which make a similar squeel) or you are using more amps then the alternator can put out. Try replacing it. I had a similar problem but it was fixed when the alternator puked.... i replaced and havent had a problem. I bought a lifetime warranty rebuilt one for like $40 with a $15 core charge which i got back after i yanked the old one.

i would check the bearings also try having a friend roll your windows up and down to make the noise and spray the belt not the pully with wd-40 and see if it stops if yes then it is a belt issue if no then it should be a bearing issue

make sure you go with a good rebuilt manufacture. some rebuilders only replace the 'worn' parts. That is olny those that are not to specs.

<font color=purple> I've got the same problem on mine , It squeels something feirce upon acceleration or even revving it up...... It's a new engine and I just put a new belt on, then when I had it timed I was told the belt was shot. They replaced it and now it squeels again............. do you think it's an alignment issue ? If so, how do I get it to run true ?

If the alternator from the 454 fits the bracket, and the wire connectors are the same, it should work.

I would remove the belt and check the bearing real quick....however...a little known fact is that a faulty DIODE in the diode tree (3) can howl like a loose belt! Usually the diode fails and each diode is worth a 3rd of your charging capacity...which shows a no charge condition...i think if you put an amp meter across her you will find a definate problem.

Lifetime warranty doesn't really mean anything if you have to replace it 8 or 10 times. Spend the extra money, and buy quality. GOPHERKILLER

mine only squeels if i roll down both windows... liek if I put a good strain on it.. I have no extra electrical accessories... no stereo or nothin... I can watch the guage go from 14 volts to 11 volts really fast... when it hits 11 volts it squeals... I tightened it today.. and no it wasnt it... I guess i'll pull it off tomorrow and get it tested

Had a similar problem on mine and it turned out the tensioner pulley bearing was on it's way out. The extra drag of the of the bearings breaking down and welding to each other was slowing everything down causing the alternator to not charge as well. Also made it squeal intermittently. But then again, my alternator caught fire a month later...

Why do people keep calling it a Bronco!!!!! [IMG]
