i just removed diff cover from 12 bolt under an 82 pickup out here and it turns out to be a 73 axle with clutch type posi and 3.07 ratio, i assumed it was 2.76 peg like most other 80-82 era 12 bolts with three speed auto usually are, also figured if it was gonna be posi that it would be gov lok, but well its not /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif SPID lable on truck said no G80 posi, so definitely a swapped axle for sure.

what im sayin is, in 82 they came with rear 10 bolts, so if he was pulling the cover off of a 12bolt, then obviously it was swapped right?

I think the 12 bolt rear can be found all the way up til 82 depending on what GM had laying around.

My 81 Jimmy had a stock 12 bolt rear...prolly because of the 4 speed. Who know's, it has a 14 now and that's what really matters.

    DITTO!!

IMO, a 10 bolt is stronger or equal to a 12 bolt anyway. 12 bolt has bigger axles, but the pinion and bearings are smaller. If you break the pinion bearing, who cares what size the shafts are?

When I first went to look at the truck I was impressed that it had a 12 bolt...then when i went to test drive the truck the 12 ate a grenade and blew the spiders through the cover backing out of the spot the truck was in./forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif

The car lot spent $750 to get the 2.76 geared open 12 bolt rebuilt before I got the truck...just so I could yank it for a 14 bolt a couple of weeks later.

My confidence in half ton rears pretty well evaporated that day.

Mine didn't when my 10 bolt grenaded from a loose pinion nut.

Only when the 12 bolt pinion bearing exploded and the pumpkin spun on the housing and the pinion was pushed through the cast iron case was my confidence in 1/2 ton rears history.

    lol !
ive seen my share of truck 12 bolts come apart also

keep in mind that truck 12 bolt have smaller pinion bearing than other axles such as the dana 44 and 8.5" and such, technically stronger than 12 bolt truck just right there. ralso gears are prone to shattering if you impact load them such as doing something like spinning out on gravel headed for clean pavement, or putting car in gear at a little higher than idle, all i see is pinion nut come loose and there goes the pinion setup..

i know of several 82 with 12 bolt axle, 82 was last year to see a 12 bolt, this is one of those things like the 77-79 K10 front axles, some ppl say 10 bolt and some say 12 bolt, personally all i ever see under 79 and older are dana44,. so.... either model fits under just fine just like 12 or 10 rear, except U joint
