I agree with Shannon on this one - this is a hugely better system than you had specced out previously. This one is much more feature rich than the others you posted and definitely upgradeable. If I were nit picky I would say get a motherboard w/ an Nvidia NForce2 chipset, but this one is just fine for your applications. Via has had the annoying tendency of rushing their products to market for some time and the KT400 (chipset used on the GA7VAX) is no exception.

Check www.pricewatch.com for a cheap video card - I would look at getting a GeForce4 MX series card - you cant possibly use all of it's features with your previously described computer usage. Heck, you might also just get a run of the mill AGP card, but you can get one of the GF4MX's for like $40-60 easy.

One other thing - check out resellerratings.com to make sure that you are buying from a legit outfit. I learned this once the hard way back when I built my first Athlon System about 2 yrs ago (Abit KT7-Raid, AMD Athlon Tbird 1.0Ghz 200fsb, etc).

Good luck! Get a CPU w/ a good warranty (1 yr is my #)!!!

Since the CPU is retail it should come with a Cooling Fan, but thats something else you WILL need with these new chipsets /forums/images/graemlins/deal.gif

I can get a decent video for free. I'll get a case w/ power supply for around 25, I'll also get a good CPU fan before the summer, and a sound card if I got some money laying around.
