Luckily, I was able to limp it the 26 miles home. It started out as a skipping feeling that I thought was the engine cutting out on me. This was associated with a bouncing feeling under throttle. About 3/4 of the way home, as I was coasting to a stop sign, I started hearing a clunking noise from the rear end. The further I drove, the louder and more obvious as to what it was it became. A mile from home it sounded like the driveshaft was slapping concrete. At the last stop sign, I hammered it to make sure it was dead. I think that was when the carrier split in two.

    HERE'S THE CARNAGE!!!

    GOV-LOC SH!T

I still would like to know if anyone has gernaded a 14 bolt gov loc? I have one and I love it. I have consistantly beat the sh*t out of it with 36's and have had no problems. Anyone broken one? Thanks

I have a 14 bolt SF with 38" and 4.56. The gov-loc did not last long. And 2 ARBs spit out there cross-shaft on the trail.

I used to have the original GM gov lock and it blew up too.
I have an Eaton Limited Slip now in my 12 bolt. Had it for a year now running 33s with no problems. Moving up to 35s soon and hope it will handle it. I'll let ya know if it doesn't. I have a 1 ton FF rear end that I'm getting ready to rebuild, regear and lock for the future. So if it blows, it will give me insentive to move up to the 1 ton club. /forums/images/graemlins/deal.gif

Hey Big Orange is that on the 90? What size tires are on it? How many miles were on that rear?

Just curious because I have the exact same as you, and ordered my 33's today

That was the original rearend from my 90. I used to have a 4.56 one in there, but the carrier bearings went south on me. There were approximately 200 thousand miles on that rearend. I am running 35" BFG MT's with the stock 3.42 ratio. I used to run 33's on it, but that was a LONG time ago. That rearend had seen hell, and I had to sling it back under as a temporary axle. I guess the 35's finished it off.

On the other hand though, I have an 87 K5 with a 3.08 gov-loc'd rearend and it only has 79K miles on it. The thing is totally shot, so it's coming out. I guess it's all in how you drive and use the truck. The 87 saw a BUNCH of towing duty. The 90 was just a highway killer before I got it.

I got some JB weld if you want to try to reuse it! /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

BTW, you may want to check your rear end, the magnet has some metal on it! /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif
