Seeing the other thread about wine reminded me of a question I wanted to ask. A good friend of mine is an older Italian gentleman who has a workshop/machineshop. He has helped me out of some hard places when it comes to automotive problems in the past. But he wont accept any money. I wanted to get him a really nice bottle of wine and give it to him when I get back into town.. Problem is, he wont tell me what he likes.

He is from Rome and even has a small vinyard at his house (<10 sq. yards or so). I know he likes wine. I have a few specialty wine places around here, so I got a pretty wide base to choose from. But I am an idiot when it comes to wine.

What would be the best kind to get?

Find out what province / general area of Rome. Vineyards are defined by location. Let me know and I'll call my son for a recommendation, he is a wine specialist.

Start with the type of wine he likes (Cabernet, Lambrusco, Chianti, etc) and price range. and we can be of more help.

OK, how about just a price range? I usually go $15-20 on wine I am gifting. But, there are some genuinely good wines in the under $10 range. I've spent more on special wine for special people, but not often.

Something to think about; Many people from Euorpe like the wine of their region. If you get something from a vinyard near his hometown in Italy you will most likely have a winner.

The other thing to do would be go to a wine store and ask for sugestions. Most of the time they will be helpful. (Sometimes they are pricks) If they think you are serious about buying a few bottles they may open one and ofter you a taste. Ocasionally a Liquor store that sells a lot of wine will do this, but usually only the wine stores do.
