I read in an earlier post about timing w/o a timing gun. My engine diesels when I shut it off, and the dist cap is cranked all the way to one side. Is there a way for me to adjust the timing without buying a gun?

It might not be the timming. It could be the choke sticking on your carb. never had that problem buut heard of it

Actually, now that you mention it, I've got a manual choke that's never worked right. I replaced the choke cable, and I can pull it closed, but when I try to push it open, it only goes about half way before the cable binds up in the sleeve. So I just run it full open all the time. I just assumed it was the timing because my dist cap is cranked all the way to one side.
