I studied Tae kwon do for about 6 yrs. Looking to get back into it when I have time. Until then I picked up some books that are similiar to what I was doing and will be training out of that until I can get back to class.

It's good to decide first what you want to accomplish.. do you want to learn self defense? would you do it mainly for exercise? are you an athletically inclined person who wants to collect trophys in competition? Do you want to learn to deal with weapons, and if so which ones? do either boxing or wrestling appeal to you?

If you have a general idea of what you want to get out of it, picking a specific style is a bit easier, as there's something out there for everyone.

Quoting the fight training place in colorado springs "If you want art, buy a brush". They teach a mix of all that stuff for the sole purpose of kicking someones ass. Ground tactics, grapling, kickyouinthefacing etc...

Well, Kim and I have been happily married for over 11 years, so, yeah, I guess you could say there's an art to it.

    Oh.......

I thought you were asking about marital artists. Sorry.

Well, it comes down to what you want to learn, and a wise person recognizes marketing to a specific demographic when he sees it. The point is, there's no superior martial art, only superior martial artists.

for example, I don't have much use for tournament point sparring, but I sure don't want to be in kicking range of a guy who's good at it. Similarly, I've known guys who were in the "artsy - arts" like kendo and tai chi, and they could be as lethal as the hard ass grappler jocks.

I've found that what the UFC type mixed martial art trained fighter has going for him is unusually superior conditioning. Since that type of training attracts guys who are already atheletes, it's easy to see why they're viewed as being the best. However, a well conditioned judo guy can dribble the floor with a guy who relies too much on brute strength. it's about who can capitalize on whose mistakes.

again, it comes down to what a guy wants...but it's a mistake to be dismissive of other styles and training methods.
