I'm in the process of possibly acquiring a 47.5 acre riverfront parcel. The listing realtor is having problems getting ahold of the actual surveyed dimensions of the acreage- it seems that the seller is experiencing financial troubles and has bigger things to worry about than providing the realtor with the necessary paperwork.

I'm curious if one of you engineering/mathematical guys could figure out some approximate boundary measurements from a drawing of the place, knowing that it is 47.5 acres in size.

This might help, probably not square tho.

208.7 ft per side x 4 sides = 834.8 perimeter feet per acre

640 acres = 1 sq mile

43560 sq ft = 1 acre

without having the bouandry line distances , just imagine that one acre is 400 x 400

Can't draw it without knowing how many sides - could be a triangle, or quadrilateral. Probably not a tetragonal scalenohedron tho.

Wraenking, maybe I'm missing what you mean but that would only be about 3.6 acres.

Paul, if you e-mail me a boundary line and rough shape I can get approximate measurements of the sides. You may want to try and go down to your county assessor's office or the county surveyor, they will probably have it platted out with measurements if it has sold anytime in the last few decades, let me know.

Edit:

They will definitely have a drawing of the lot so you can get a general idea and the legal description may be deciperable into lot line measurements if it is metes and bounds type.

The problem is a little more complex than that. The property is a triangle, with one side bordering the river, so it's meandering. I thought someone might be able to take 47.5 acres and then give me the approximate lengths of the 2 square sides. I know that the riverside boundary would be impossible to accurately measure.

I'm gonna get Kim to post the picture of the parcel.

Sux having 2 Daves in the same thread, eh? Reminds of a "Kids in the Hall" skit- "These are the Daves I know, I know......"

OK, someone check my guzintas

For the calcs it looks like the long side is 2.36xshort side

short side = 1325'
long side = 3124'
river side = 3393'

Area = 2069650ftsq

1 acre = 43560ftsq

Those dimensions provide roughly 47.5 acres.....

I did it in AutoCAD using circles with the radii set to the numbers above. Then drew a polyline thru the 3 points and quireied for area. Got an area of 2069649.9017 feet^2 which Convert.exe says is 47.5124 acres.

So 2Dogs, you were close.

Always feels good when a totally different method comes up with the same number.

Did you try to estimate the legs of the triangle? I am most curious about that cuz you can get the area by any number of leg combos.
