I have a 40 year old conrete retaining wall, about 38 feet in length by 3 feet high and 6 inches thick. And is partially falling over on its own. Trying to get a general idea on what the prevailing hourly price is for having a backhoe come out and tear it out. I'm seeing prices on the net ranging from $65 - $95 an hour with 4 hour minimum. Is this in the ballpark?

If that includes disposal, that's not bad. But I'd get an completed job estimate, including disposal. That way the contractor will not milk it.

And yes, I've been around the construction/excavation industry for >10 yrs.

Yes I thought of renting one, but 1) dont know how to run one. Sure I could learn. 2) where I live there are not any places that rent those things out.

Cheap is my middle name. I have gone the sledge hammer route on it. I'm too old for that chit...lol...and that concrete is HARD. Did think about renting a 60lb electric jackhammer though. But the idea of having somebody coming out and in a couple hours have it all demoed sure sounds appealing.

Anyways thanks confirming the hourly rate for those things though.

Yeah thats about right. My company charges $65 per hour with a 4 hour minimum for Me to go out on a job. Unless You have run any equipment before I would not suggest renting one and trying to figure it out on Your own. It's not something You just pick up in a few minutes and You could really tear sh!t up if Ya don't know what Your doing. Not to mention You would be paying for it

I just paid 100 per hour for backhoe, operator and laborer, so you are right in the ballpark. Disposal is a biggie, so make sure that is included.

I dont really need to worry about disposal. I will be putting a new block retaining wall in its place, only making it 2 foot higher. So the debris from the old wall can be used for fill.

    Thanks for the relies.

okay here is what you do:

get the keys to your truck
get in your truck and put it in 4-lo and put your tranny in 1st and go to the wall and floor it
pray to god it goes down easy
and by no time at all you should have no more wall
    :)

LOL....well dont think that didnt cross my mind. I tested the wall with a sledge hammer, it wasnt budging. Plus the visions I had of me hitting my neighbors house (it's about 8 feet from the wall) as I flew over the non-budging wall, kinda squashed that idear.
