I'd like to make up some real good sauce and keep it around instead of buying this and that kind, trying to remember which kind I like and don't like.

    Kinda sweet, not to though.

Little spicy is O.K. but not hot.

Tomato based, usually, mustard based I like on chicken sometimes.

Gotta have a little vinegar in it, I think.

Kinda simple (like me) not 1001 ingredients please.

Here's the one I make (really old recipe...)

In a saucepan, melt 1 tablespoon butter ( or margarine), add 1 clove garlic, crushed. Cook for a minute or so.
    Add 1/2 cup Ketchup,
    1/3 cup Chili Sauce,
    2 tablespoons Brown Sugar,
    2 tablespoons chopped onion
    1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
    1 tablespoon mustard
1 teaspoon celery seed (or I use celery salt if I'm out)
    1/4 teaspoon salt
    dash bottled hot pepper sauce

    Bring to boiling.

I use this on ribs all the time and everyone really enjoys it. It's not really hot at all, but flavourful!

have you tried Sweet Baby Ray's? it's pretty good but I think it's a little too sweet so I end up adding more vinegar and ketchup :D .

A lot of commercial BBQ sauces are based on a sauce called Cattlemans BBQ sauce from the same people that do French's yellow mustard. Walmart sells it in big bottles, and you can pick up the heat with your own additives
