    <font color="green"> The tag on the bolt has the tooth count for the R&amp;P and the build date, the C36585 is the RPO#, I beleive, and the 44-5F is likely the casting number for the center section. </font>

    Any chance you can get a pic of the tag? I've *never* seen a GM axle with any tag other than the limited slip/posi tags.

    Just curious what it looks like.

    I've had maybe 8 10 bolts in my career, (none from late 80's) and none of them have had tags. Dealt with plenty of 8.5's and 7.5's (car axles, 10 bolts, for those not in the know) from the early-mid 80's as well, and none of those had any tags except the limited slip diff if so equipped.

    Don't know how axle casting dates work. (if they even exist) Engine date castings, typically they are made early in the model year, or late the year before. (so an '86 truck might have an engine casting date of late 1985) But axles could have been made in huge lots for say 2 years at a time or something. If they didn't do it (intentionally) for engine blocks, doubt they would have for the axles either though.

    Rear axles have a 2 or 3 digit code stamped into the passenger side axle tube. (either on the "top" as installed in the vehicle, or facing forward as installed) No clue if that applies to front axles as well. Once you get that number, you still have to figure out how to decode it, and that too is difficult. With cars, those codes changed almost every year, and were not indicative of year.

    44 = Dana 44
    5 = Series # (in the late 60's they were on 2)
    C = Chevy (just a guess)

    Are you sure that isnt a 45-11? That should be the ring gear to pinion ratio (45-11 is 4.09 but 48-11 is 4.36).
