has anyone designed or designed and built there own house?
Right now in drafting we are creating our "dream home" and all. and it's interesting researching different house plans etc on how different people build different houses and configure everything to work.

Anyone involved in anything like that?

Hopefully I will come to AZ sooner than never. I want to see how warm it is in the winter.

eh Dad took designs he bought and changed them for our new house. Then built it. To really fully design a house would require a lot of knowledge of design and regulations I think.

This is probably what I will end up doing when I get ready to build a house in the next couple of years. It also helps that through my work I know several architects and structural engineers who can help me out and check over my design when I am finished.

I'm working on the design of ours right now, we are putting our house on the market in Jan/Feb so Ive got to be done by then.

Ive worked with alot of people who have done there own and many architects who have done plans for others and the biggest problems I see in new construction is lack of details, they think just because they can draw it it can be built but its amazing what being off by 1" affects. The problem with remodels is the same, they leave off too many details to come up with a good material list.

I had to do this several times for school and have done a lot of remodel jobs over the past 20+ years. Done them on both Paper/Pencel and CAD (autoCAD, Arch. Desktop (wish I had a copy of this still), & Land Desktop. It can be cool if you do it right... Virtial Tours Are cool.....

We just got done designing/building ours. We got some ideas from different houses and I drew it up and we built it. It has been a ton of work but has been very gratifying.

Now I'm starting to design the detached shop :D
Somewhere I've got a finished picture - here it is in progress.

to get a material list or good details was like pulling teeth for my dad when he ordered the designs for our new house.

    Thanks guys.

    Sounds really interesting.

Fubeca, if you have any finished pictures and a picture of the house plans that would be awesome. Maybe put your last name on them so no one steals it though. Thanks

I have the original blueprints from the first house that we bought. From 1911. I hope to be able to build it again one day.
