My real problem is there a trick to the springs in the tailgate. Is all tension off when tailgate is up and then you have to disconnect the spring form the back of the bumper and then just disconnect hinges and tailgate straps. Is that all there is to it or does someone know a better way.

You already figured it out. There's way less tension on the springs with the tailgate closed. On some years you can then just remove the nut that holds the posts to the frame. Just did this on an '88 a couple of weekends ago. It came off pretty easy. You'll need some help when you unbolt the hinges. That tailgate is pretty heavy!

If you're lucky like me and have acess to a fork lift, tailgate work becomes a joke. Just be sure to pad the forks and its a snap.
