As long as you don't use copyrighted material you are fine, same goes for downloading music of the internet.

If you profit from it in any way, you can't use anyone's music who hasn't released it for use in that way

You might try to look for remixes or wierd music, like video game music, some of the mixers might let you use them

    Huh?

Anyway... There was a thing that Civil Air Patrol almost got in trouble over... Some guy named Scott Matthews who makes some pretty badass movies made a commercial using a Blink 182 song... he figured he'd be a good guy and get the band's (or the record company anyway) permission to use the song on TV... they said no...

I guess it wasn't a big thing... just kinda sucks for Scott, since he spent all that time on the commercial and has to totally redo it now to different music... Should've asked the band before hand I guess... /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

find a local band that doesnt suck, but hasnt gone big time yet, and have them do covers of a song you like.

Sounds like you got your info already, but figured I'd toss this in.

    From Ascap's site - http://www.ascap.com/licensing/generalfaq.html :

    [ QUOTE ]
    4. Do I need permission to perform music as part of a presentation in class or at a training seminar?

If the performance is part of face to face teaching activity at a non-profit educational institution, permission is not required. Permission is required when music is used as part of training seminars, conventions, or other commercial or business presentations.

    [/ QUOTE ]

    And from BMI's site - http://www.bmi.com/licensing/broadcaster/repro.asp :

    [ QUOTE ]
    Media Licensing:
What Copyrights are there, and how do they affect my business?

    Reproduction Right
The exclusive right of a music copyright owner, granted by the Copyright Act, to authorize the mechanical reproduction of a musical work in a record, cassette or CD, or the reproduction of a musical work onto the soundtrack of an audio/visual work.

    [/ QUOTE ]

You can't use a local band to do covers, the content is copyrighted. You'd basically be the equivelant of a bar owner who has a cover band on. By law, the bar owner is supposed to pay Ascap/BMI for every copyrighted song performed.

I agree, avoid Metallica... Megadeth has sounded better since conception anyway, Dave Mustaine just hasn't been good at thier image...

    Good Luck!
