One of my friends bought a f150 for $150 with a blown motor. i think it spun a bearing. he wants me to build him a strong 302. it is an 86. anyone know any specs on this motor. also what parts interchange from lets say a 351w. I know you are all chevy guys and so am i, but there has to be someone who has some info. Thanks in advance.

Heads interchange on the 302s and 351s. There are alot of other parts like cams and things like that. Intakes doe not change because the 351W is wider. What kind of builder? If he has some cash I can help you build a strong 302. I use to work at a ford shop.

He doesn't want to spend very much. maybe under $1000. hes getting married. it is just going to be a cheap truck. here in mi we dont need to worry about inspections or emissions.

Get a E303 cam for it. ITs a ford racing cam. Very streetable, but makes power. put a set of headders on it. Remove cats. Port the heads, and put an intake on it if you have extra case. Trick flow makes a good one.
BTW if it isnt a roller cam, find another block that is or convert.

Heads on 302 fords use 7/16" head bolts and 351W uses 1/2" head bolts. You can use the 351W heads if you use the special head bolt washers which locate the bolt proper in the hole of the head.

I think your friend would be money ahead to just drop a used 390 in, instead of building a 302. It shouldn't be hard to find a good 390 in a junk truck for cheap. I'm not much for Furds, but I see good running used 390 motors going for under $500.00 alot around here.

well the thing is he wants horse power. here in mi i can get him a running 460 for like $800, but he want a high horse 302 we have a complete motor to work with, just have to put some performance parts in it. another thing is the belhousing thing. why can't ford just be the same as chevy, just have one bellhousing. Thanks for all the info.

390's are, IMHO, a boat anchor. As are all of the FE engine series. You can make decent power with them, but they are HEAVY. And I started out in Fords.
If a swap is to be done, up to the 351C (including the 240 & 300 sixes) will bolt to the existing trans. 351M's, 400's (the best Ford truck engine when built right, 4" x 4"), 429's and 460's all use the 'big block' b/h bolt pattern. If you're going to port the heads, pay the most attention to the exhaust ports. That's where real gains in the small blocks can be made. Gasket match the intakes and call them good to go.
