I am looking to install a winch between the frame rails up front, under the radiator support. Anyone done this? If so, what winch?

Good question! inquiring minds want to know!

I'd end up mounting it right behind my bumper or something.

Im sure there is a way to do it, but probably requires some fabrication.

Yes - I have mine mounted behind the bumper between the rails in a upside down position using a 8mm steel plate as the mounting base. The setup works fine and is hidden completely behind a fold-down no. plate bracket. The winch? - A Warn 9500i. By moving the remote plug up into the cab, it makes recovery operations a pleasure.

Do you have any pics? Did you have any trouble getting the drum to be centered?

I have a dual tube front bumper and at first thought about running the winch line between the tubes and having the 4-way roller fairlead attached to the front of the tubes. BUT, the bumper is too high. I plan to mount the winch to a large steel plate. I will then fasten that steel plate to the underside of the frame rails. The winches with the disconnected solenoid pack will clear between there and the underside of my radiator. Then I just have to figure out how to route the cable.

I'm sure I can find a pic in a old 4x4 book. I'll have to scan it tonight when my daughter gets home the scanner is on her computer.

    Hey BRAIN!!!!
You can always come by the shop and look at the blazer. It has had a winch mounted between the framrails for years. I have an OLD ramsey 8k. I remote mounted the cylanoids to the fender well. My plug is in the middlw of the Grills Bowtie, andi also added remote hard wired switches in the cab so I don't even need the cotroller really. I would show you pics but am not able at this point. Soon, however you will be able to see them at www.rocktek.ws , i am having the sitebuilt now. It won't be anything fancy at all, just pics of our rigs and customers rigs to start out. /forums/images/icons/smile.gif
Anyways feel free to contact me or swing by the shop to look at the winch.

    I did,
I used a Ramsey Platinum 9500, It appears to me that the Ramsey winches have all the planatary gears on one-side, and the motor on the other, this makes it a bit-more balanced. I still had to shave the frame-rails a bit on the motor side to center the winch tho'. I also had to cut the bumper sill-panel to clear the sylinoid pack.

I think Warn Winches split-the gear set and run a-planatary set on the motor side, makeing it off-set.
