I was wondering if anyone was running the 14BFF spool that Drivetrain Direct is offering. Likes-Dislikes??

Anyone know of another source for the 14BFF spool??

Miller or Lincoln. Weld the spiders solid and you won't have any problems...

Cone Ind is going to be selling the mini spools through Polyperformance.

The regurlar cone full spool is for 46spline /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif axles.

I was wondering the same thing. I am currently running the welded rear (like the article) and want to replace it with either a spool or a Detroit. I like the way the welded acts though. It is very predictable and I already know how to drive with it. I am thinking about welding my spiders solid, but I don't want to ruin the carrier so if one day I decide I want a Detroit I don't have to find another carrier.

Dont weld them to the carrier, weld the 4 spiders, 2 side gears, and the cross all together. That way you can still remove it later. Thats my plan as soon as I get a chance to get it done.

I was reading a little bit about that today. This is the first time I have heard of this setup, but if it works and is stronger then the welded voids, then I will probably do it this summer. I plan to start some decent wheeling with my truck as I just picked up a set of 35's and I definitly don't want to spit my spiders on the tough trails.

Rene is the only one I have heard any long term feed back from that I can recall and he had chipping and such from the gears clashing. /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif Solid welded is the way to go IMO.

I've welded mine, Shaggy's, and Gokartergo's already, Will be doing NoSmog73's this weekend and SheWheeler's within the month. All welded solid. Mine is behind appx 400 big block horse power and a 465...Nothin has broke yet...Well, except a set of D44 spiders. /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif Shaggy's is with a 465 and 42's...Gokartergo is 36's, and Sheewheeler will be runnin 37's...The ONLY real downside is tire wear. Well, And the tire chirping...If you care about that kinda thing. I certainly don't...I think the wierd stares I get at the gas stion are kinda cool. /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif

So if I were to ship you a set of spidergears, sidegears, and crossshaft you could weld them up? Or do you need the carrier and rest of the axle present to do this? I have a spare set of spiders, sides, and cross shaft I carry as spares I could send you if the axle isn't necesarry. How much do you charge to do this? Thanks

Re: Anyone running the 14BFF Spool??

Rod, thanks for the link. I'll watch their site.

I called Drivetrain Direct today. (They are the only advertisement that I have ever seen that offered the spool.) The guy said that they are NOT available and never have been. The company that was going to produce them got involved with something else and have never made one for Drivetrain Direct to sell.
Oh well...

Re: Anyone running the 14BFF Spool??

I have had my 14FF welded solidly (side gears to spiders) for a couple of years now with no problems. I just can't justify spending $200+ on a spool when welding can accomplish the same thing for a fraction of the cost (mine was actually free!).

I was put on a list several months ago glad they called to say they weren't gonna make them. Glad I welded it up now.

I had heard that Cone was going to be the one building them for DD. Don't know if that is true, or not. Don't remember where I heard it. I keep checking w/Dave @ Polyperformance every 6 mos. or so. Still no exact word. I have an e-mail from him @ home from a couple of weeks ago. Will check it when I get home and let you know.

Re: Anyone running the 14BFF Spool??

I sent Dave an email yesterday and haven't heard back on that one. He is looking at making some new slugs for my 10/44 front though. I'm anxious to get back in touch with him though. I'm either going spool or welded. Spool if it comes out and is a decent enough price. Welded if not. I may go welded for the time being, but we'll see...

Re: Anyone running the 14BFF Spool??

Got my 35Spl 60 slugs from him the other day. Can't wait to get the front under to put them to good use. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Evidentially I deleted the reply e-mail /forums/images/graemlins/angryfire.gif. Have always wondered since Cone is making the 46spl full spool, could they just broach one of them for the 30spl rather than 46? Of course, I also wonder why they don't make a Detroit locker to fit in the POS Gov-Loc case. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
