Yep, the gun shop here in town has a .50 cal for $1,200. It's kick a$$! If I had the extra money I'd buy it just for bragging rights! I wonder where I could go to sight that thing in?

I have a 50 cal. Desart Eagle back in my bedroom. Big handgun, but expencive as hell too shoot. Each bullet cost $2.50, and that adds up quickly when ya like to do some target shooting. I usely go through 4 boxs of 9mm rounds each time, and I go out shooting 3 to 4 times a week. I'd reather spend $22.00 for 4 of boxs 100 rounds of 9mm them $250.00 for 1 box of 100 rounds of 50 cal.

Marine sniper Carlos Hathcock, in Vietnam tagged a VC 14 year old female at over a mile with a M2 .50 cal that they had scoped on a post outside their camp tent. If you've ever seen a M2, that's the old boxy .50 cal that's been around for ages, and it's semi-auto. Heck of a shot.

These new ones like the Barret models are even better. A lot of EOD teams have the Barret guns so they can disarm mines (shoot the things from a distance). Military snipers have some due to the range on them.

It's the biggest caliber firearm a civilian can own (someone correct me if I'm wrong) and yes, there is really no practical use for civilians, (unless your a lazy elk hunter ).

Oh come on now. Almost all of the people I know who shoot do so for
recreational purposes - among other reasons - self defense comes to mind.
Don't flame me thinking a 50 cal is used for SD. That would be impractible.
Shooting is just darn FUN! And to be able to crack one of these off has to
be an incredible rush. Just seeing a target a mile away would be a challenge
in itself, but actually hitting it would be a real kicker!! Don't give me this
    "no sporting purpose" crap!!! /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

I like target shooting just for the fun of it. Last weekend I shot a propane tank. Made a big boom !!! Some guy brought out 20 of them. I bought one for 10 bucks after seeing him blow up a couple of them. Was nervious at first of shrapnel, but nobody got hurt, and after watching most of them blow up from being shot, I let loose with the 9mm. Got it with the 3rd shot at 700 feet. Pretty good with a pistal in my opinion.

Ah no, I would be the last one in the world to go there. IBRBGSMKHO, if one can afford to buy one, much less afford to shoot one, then more power to them. If one wants to hunt large game animals with them, then they can have the fun of carrying the thing into the bush. I wouldn't mind having one myself, but right now in this time of my life, it's cost prohibitive and for most people it is.

It's just a situation that in most tactical situations, there's a better solution than unleashing the wrath of these beasts on the problem.

My buddy has one, they are freakin awesome.
It is sorta like the Barret but of his own design.
wieghs 35lbs with out the butt wieght.
A couple guys in the shop have them, they go out into the woods and pop pumpkins with them at 600 yds.
One of them is a semi auto with a 10 rd clip.
You can get plans to build them off the net.

Just to clarify, the M2 .50 cal is a machine gun. Yes, it can be fired in semi auto. Carlos Hatchcock made the shot with that weapon, with an 8 power scope, at approx 2200 yards!!! .50's are cool.

Its also slighly exagerated.... no Military amunition is that accurate. Remeber the .50 cal is for machine guns originally..

They also dont mention the training required to shoot like that. What do you think the military drop out rate for sniper school is?

They do have some major testosterone appeal though.. that is what will get them banned.

Your overlooking that the military didn't adopt the .50 as a sniper type rifle untill civilian target shooters showed them their potential...

Hand loaded .50 cals @ 750 grains of projectile have an awsome ballistice coificiant (terrible spelling)..perfect for long distance high powered competition.
