Anyone ever sent their iPod in to Apple to have the battery replaced? My battery completely died Thursday. It hasn't held a charge since December 2005 and would always have to be plugged in, but now it's beyond function and won't even turn on, even when plugged in. I didn't know the batteries could be replaced until I got onto the troubleshooting section of the Apple website. It will cost $60 to fix it but I guess that's better than buying a new one.

I went for it and mailed it to Apple yesterday...

You are lucky, at one point Apple was charging $249 to replace the batteries.

I've replaced batteries in iPods before, it's really not that hard. Cost me about $10. Wouldn't recommend it if you want to maintain your warranty though, as opening the case voids the warranty.

Strahan I wish I would have talked to you first. I bought my iPod in 2004 so no warranty to worry about. Where did you go to get the battery and how how dod you open the unit?

battery replacement came under civil suit a year or so ago, but I missed the deadline for that and had to buy an ebay battery. Now my hard drive in my 3g Ipod is on the fritz...

yeah the battery issue cause a MAJOR stink when they first started to fail. Apple tech's were actually telling people they were better off just buying a new IPOD.

Check around youtube, there were a few nasty video's made about it.

Sadly as for your ontopic question, I've never had an iPod, so I don't know the specifics on changing batteries, but I'd bet a google search would provide instructions.

This is where I'm about to order a new battery for my 3rd Gen iPod. Going with the 1100mAH. Seems pretty easy to do with the proper case splitting tool. Google "ipod battery replacement" and you'll get lots of hits for other battery vendors & stuff.

I was part of that class action suite.
Got a letter with the settlement that stated I had to "send my IPOD to XXX address" and they will replace the battery.
    Haven't done it yet though.

So they sent me a new iPod...

Yeah. Just got it the mail yesterday. I sent my old one to California last week expecting them to replace the battery and send it back to me. Instead I get a brand-new, still-in-plastic, iPod mini. Same exact one as my old one.

$70 for another brand-new iPod? Works for me! :D

I'll assume you sent it empty.

No, it crashed on me that's why I sent it. I couldn't have emptied it if I wanted to. I have a huge archive of mp3s on data discs and on my computer so the new iPod has already been refilled.

    *Update 1 year later*

Now my new iPod is starting to do the same thing my original one did just before it died.

I swear they make the batteries chitty just so you'll have to keep buying new iPods.

I have an iPod Mini. I'm thinking I want to replace the battery myself. Anyone ever do it?

I have been buying I pods on eBay and repairing them at home been doing good with it.I have been getting batteries from a seller there also with shipping cost me 11.95 for an extended service and so I have got 8 of these and have had no issues.
Some i pods you have to solder the battery in and you have to be very careful you don't burn the board. There are others that have a moldex connector that you unplug.

The hardest part of the repair is getting the case open with out denting the plastic body or breaking the tabs off inside the back case. The only thing I have not been able to fix is the main board.

It's very easy to do,Patients and go at it slow!!!!! Here is a link click here
It's the best one I have found for good fast cheap work.

I might as well try replacing the battery. Got nothing to lose! If it doesn't work I'll go buy a Microsoft Zune or something.

Yes, buy a Zune, mine's lasted since March last year and the battery is as strong as ever. Plus, it's way easier to work with, more logically designed controls and menu's.
