Was talking to a used 4x4 parts yard guy and he was telling me that 3/4 (8 lug) 10 bolt frond ends are not corprate axles. He told me that they were built by Spicer. And that the quality and strength is better.???????????????????? Anyone got info on this???

I'm pretty sure the Dana (spicer) 44 has 10 bolts.

yeah, homey at the junk yard is trippin'. He must have got confused by both the 10bolt and d44 having 10 bolts that hold the cover on. The d44 (that he thinks is a 10bolt) is a hair stronger because it has 30 spline axles as apposed to the corp.10bolt having 28 splines (unless it is 88? or later, then it will have 30 splines too)

I don't know about 10B's but the 3/4-ton D44 has a thicker center section than the 1/2-ton D44. It is about 1/2" thicker where the pasanger side axle tube goes in.

Although the 30 spline axles neck down, negating the extra strength of the thicker axle. An axle is only as strong as it's weakest point.

10 Bolt fronts are made under contract to GM spec by Spicer. Most even have a Dana <> in the pumpkin casting. The knuckles out are interchangable. The 10bolt has thinner tube walls than the D44. 3/4 10 bolt may have thick wall. ALL the seals including the inner axle shaft seals are the same.

the 10 bolt has thinner tube walls, but a greater tubing diameter.

OK now this is more inline with what the guy was telling me. He said the 3/4 were made by Dana/Spicer and the regular 1/2 were GM. I realize the differences like everyone else between D44 and 10b, 12b,14b. But I haven't ever seen the real specs between the 1/2 and 3/4 10 bolts. Fact please, not fiction.
