Are gear ratio's stamped on ring gear?

Discussion in '1973-1991 K5 Blazer | Truck | Suburban' started by fireinthehole, Aug 28, 2003.

Are gear ratio\'s stamped on ring gear?

I am going to be looking at some 14bff's that are already off the parent vehicle. When I pull the covers, are the gear ratios stamped on the ring gear? If not, how do I tell what ration they are? Anything else I should look for at the same time?

    Thanks- Mat

The ratio isn't there, but the number of teeth on the ring and pinion are listed. Divide ring gear number by pinion gear number and you'll know the ratio. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif Look along the edge of the ring gear. You'll find a bunch of numbers listed. You're looking for something like 41 10 in the number string. 41/10=4.10:1, 41/9=4.56:1, etc. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

also make sure that it doesnt have a gov lock or a limited
slip that is because you need a open carrier if you want to put in a detroit also look for missing teeth on the ring gear and rusted gears

I am not trying to argue with anyone but If you find one with the gov-lock consider it. I have a 14boltFF with the factory gov-lock and it works pretty good, probably not as good as a detroit but it grabs both shafts when I need the traction.I always see both rear tires spinning in my mirrors when I'm pulling something out. I've taken off from the side of the road plenty of times where one side is in the mud, dirt, gravel and my other side on asphalt and put my foot in it hard and it always sends power to the traction side. Also the gov-lock in the bigger axles is a much bigger/beefier unit than the junk unit in the 10 bolts. Detroits make a lot of noise and can be hard on tires. Just my 2 cents /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Although I am running 35's and don't do rocks. I would probably choose a detroit if 40's or bigger and/or rocks are in it's future. Otherwise I would go with a gov-lock.

[/ QUOTE ] a true 14 bolt detroit replaces the carrier as well as the spider gears. a "lunch box" just replaces the spiders which is what you would want an open for.

    Wrong.

A 14b Detriot sits inside the original open carrier and replaces just the spiders, side gears and cross shaft. Technically, a 14b Detriot is a lunch box locker. You split the carrier in hald, pull the old stuff out, set the detriot in there and bolt the carrier back together.

While searching for rear ends, I found a few ring gears with no markings. Aftermarket? Perhaps...

If you find any with no markings just count the teeth on the ring and pinion.

    Bring a small flashlight, too.

Quite the contrary, I have a front and rear detroit. My front is loud when in 4wd with the hubs locked, but my rear you don't really even notice is there except when it grabs. As a matter of fact, the only time my rear detroit makes any noise is when I lock the rear tires up, then it makes a bunch of noise.

on factory gears in all axles GM it will say "GM, 3xxxxxxx(part stamping number) tooth count of both gears, and date code"
