    Sounds like a reasonable guy!:D

TO THOSE OF YOU NOT FAMILIAR WITH JOE ARPAIO HE IS THE MARICOPA ARIZONA COUNTY SHERIFF AND HE KEEPS GETTING ELECTED OVER AND OVER.

THIS IS ONE OF THE REASONS WHY:

Sheriff Joe Arpaio (in Arizona) who created the "tent city jail":

He has jail meals down to 40 cents a serving and charges the inmates for them.

He stopped smoking and porno magazines in the jails. Took away their weights. Cut off all but "G" movies.

He started chain gangs so the inmates could do free work on county and city projects.

Then he started chain gangs for women so he wouldn't get sued for discrimination.

He took away cable TV until he found out there was a federal court order that required cable TV for jails. So he hooked up the cable TV again only let in the Disney channel and the weather channel.

When asked why the weather channel he replied, so they will know how hot it's gonna be while they are working on my chain gangs.

He cut off coffee since it has zero nutritional value.

When the inmates complained, he told them, "This isn't the Ritz/Carlton. If you don't like it, don't come back."

He bought Newt Gingrich' lecture series on videotape that he pipes into the jails.

When asked by a reporter if he had any lecture series by a Democrat, he replied that a democratic lecture series might explain why a lot of the inmates were in his jails in the first place.

    More on the Arizona Sheriff:

With temperatures being even hotter than usual in Phoenix (116 degrees just set a new record), the Associated Press reports: About 2,000 inmates living in a barbed-wire-surrounded tent encampment at the Maricopa County Jail have been given permission to strip down to their government-issued pink boxer shorts.

On Wednesday, hundreds of men wearing boxers were either curled up on their bunk beds or chatted in the tents, which reached 138 degrees inside the week before.

Many were so swathed in wet, pink towels
soaked in sweat collected on their chests and dripped down to their pink socks.

"It feels like we are in a furnace," said James Zanzot, an inmate who has lived in the tents for 1 year. "It's inhumane."

Joe Arpaio, the tough-guy sheriff who created the tent city and long ago started making his prisoners wear pink, and eat bologna sandwiches, is not one bit sympathetic He said Wednesday that he told all of the inmates: "It's 120 degrees in Iraq and our soldiers are living in tents too, and they have to wear full battle gear, but they didn't commit any crimes, so shut your damned mouths!"

Way to go, Sheriff! Maybe if all prisons were like this one there would be a lot less crime and/or repeat offenders. Criminals should be punished for their crimes - not live in luxury until it's time for their parole, only to go out and commit another crime so they can get back in to live on taxpayers money and enjoy things taxpayers can't afford to have for themselves.

I am all for crime and punishment . I just feel our sherriff needs to be an actual policeman , not a politician . Also he needs to stop messing around with our money , he has been under investigation for awhile now .

This might sound a little like I'm generalizing, but if he can make all that happen, I'm all for letting him have a little lattitude in some of the things he does.

No, instead of having a actual prison building, he uses surplus military tents. So there are no cells, bars or any other normal jail stuff. The compound is surrounded by barbed wire. I saw a show on tv about this place.

It couldn't be a prison building anyway . Sherriffs detain . Wardens correct .

These are just some tents for people with very minor crimes to hang out in for less than a year . Lots of guys with traffic tickets , minor possesion , and simple assault cases are mixed in with pimps , johns , dealers , and fraudalent people .

Simple unused area behind the womens building is where the tents are . The actuaul "compound" is a lot with several different housing units for non sentenced inmates . Looks a lot like an abandoned school from the sky than it does a jail .

You have to remember he is an elected official. Yes, he was a cop for a number of years. I'm sure that a great number of our country's sheriffs honestly and truly care about law enforcement and the citizens they serve, sometimes you just have to be careful on what they do. While some actions may seem awesome on the surface, deep down inside they think about that vote and their actions may be nothing more than something to garner the vote.

Arapaio has done a lot of great things, but I've seen the man enough on TV to figure out that he is somewhat of a media whore. I know there are plenty of people down that way who hate the guy. The best way to really gauge what a sheriff is truly like is to find out what the rank and file of the agency thinks and that itself will be hard to do because unless the guy is a downright douchebag, the rank and file will more times than not stay quiet on the issue.

I have heard rumors to the effect that he treats his deputies just a notch above the prisoners. I have no idea if there is any truth to it, but I can tell he is an attention whore for sure. Then again, as an elected official, you theoretically should be doing exactly what those that elected you want. It seems that he is doing that.

If the Guy's methods are so good then why does His jail always seem to be full? Or at least thats the way it is portrayed on TV.

INS holds are many in the jail . They sit until their cases are over , then they sit even more until they are deported . On the same note , the poor people who can't afford bond/bail sit there too until court dates . It is reality .

Not to mention it's county jail. There's a nice cross section of agencies responsible for the capture of those in his jail..............................

I wonder what is going too happen when one of the inmates dies from heat stroke. I believe in punishment, but there comes a point where it becomes cruel and inhuman treatment.
