I was reading about autonomous systems in robotics. They're trying to develope robots that will learn on thier own and be able to navigate and learn thier environments. I was pretty surprised when I read what the techs consider artificial intelligence. I figured AI was a machine that could produce spontaneous actions to a goal, and deal with unexpected complications, but it appears it's not considered that complex. We use everyday products that run artificial intelligence. The movies seem to make it more than it is... It seems machines that will have a conversation with you are really another couple hundred years away...

Pretty soon, we'll have a big stir about the legality of robots getting married. Of course, California will let them get married... Robot pride parades, inter-something relationships (humans/robots together would be?).... /forums/images/graemlins/yikes.gif

Yup. Interestingly, much of the internet is considered to be powered by artificial intelligence. I.E. most of the search engines are considered to be implementations of AI.

A robot is just another machine. The robots brain, or the software/programming is what makes it an intelligent device, or a "Robot" instead of an operated machine (like a backhoe). Much of the software driving some of the robots I was reading about is never installed in a robot until it's completed. Developers write, test, and rework all the software that will drive the machine in a computer that simulates the machine, then when they've finally worked it out, they implement it in a machine. Then the machine becomes a "robot".

So the Terminator and The Matrix are still a good ways off...
