Is the system R-12 or R-134a?

do you have a walmart or kmart near you?? They sell conversion kits and bottles of refrigerant dirt cheap. I did the AC on my old K5 in the parking lot of Kmart on a road trip 2 years ago. Ice cold air the whole drive home for under $100 (can't really remember how much overall), and in less than 15 minutes.

I have the R134a but it sprung a leak somewhere. The only thing about the R134a is that it is not as cold as the R12 but it sure is a lot cheaper to service. I really need to get it fixed because it has been over 100 here all week. And to think we ain't seen nothing yet. It isn't even summer yet! This year our city had the hottest spot in the nation twice. That's right--even hotter than Death Valley.

Bigtex, if your system is already totally evacuated, take off all the fittings and replace all the O-rings (one at a time so you don't lose track of what goes where, etc.). Mine sprung a leak at an evaporator fitting O-ring because it dry-rotted from sitting, then I guess didn't want to hold any new pressure after I started using it again. That happened after not using it in winter, then using it again in spring, several months after the re-charge.

Cool! Thanks, hopefully that means that now I won't have to sweat my a$$ off every time I sit in the ol' K5.

Hey Rocko, as long as I am working at the shop that I am at, I'm looking for another job, we can do your a/c done. No problem. It's in Dallas, but the offer is open.
