I know this isn't tech but I'm hoping some of those guys see this so they can get it fixed. When you open the page it's just black with text saying "This Site Has Been Defaced!!". :yikes:

It's a shame that some people (with skill) have nothing better to do. Hackers suck!! :angry1: :angry1:

i'm on the texas4x4.org board and got an email today from the webmaster. i think it is from the hacker. it said something to the effect of upgrade your stuff or i'll wipe it clean next time.

they must be pretty bored to go after innocent boards. its devastating to those hardcore webwheelers. of which i am one now. its snowing in texas. :xmas:

Micah expects to get Ak5 up and running soon. He just does not have the time right now to do all the upgrading & fixing it takes.. he has family in town for the holidays, so it will probably be down for a few days at least.

A'ight, so my question is, HOW DO WE (CK5) PROTECT OURSELVES?!?!?!?! I don't want to be a participant in an inactive 'board. I'd rather not have to deal with viruses and whatnot....

How can 'boards like CK5, Pirate, Austin4x4, and the like protect themselves? What measures are already currently in place??

As I understand it, what we're seeing is an exploitation of a security hole in free bulletin board software. Like Steve Fox said in another post, the chances of this happening on a board like this or Pirate is possible but unlikely because this is purchased software so the hacker would need to buy a copy to play with.

It isn't necessarily the board software that is the problem. The fact that its "purchased" or "free" board software is irrelevant. There are many ways to get into a server OTHER than through the board software to do damage.

CK5 could have the latest and greatest board software, but if the rest of the server that the board is hosted on has vulnerabilities, then the board software isn't going to help jack.

EVERYTHING on a server needs to be consistently updated, patched, and unused services need to be shut down. It takes time, knowledge, and a diligent admin to stay on top of an entire server.
