Volvo’s Collision Warning System with brake support was launched recently in its S80, where a red light flashes and a buzzer sounds if you’re about to run into something. It even goes a step further and applies more brake pressure if you’re not stopping fast enough.
Now, the company is working on the next generation of the Collision Warning System which actually does all the braking for you. Take a look at it working in this video, where Volvo researchers set up an inflatable obstacle and the brakes stop the car just in time. Put this real-word research together with the DARPA self-driving vehicles, and soon we’ll all be sitting in the back seat, putting our feet up as machines become our limo drivers. – Charlie White

I do believe that "great idea" is going to cause an awful lot more random accidents because the car brakes by itself because it thinks something is in front of it. This is about on par with OBD3 taking a while to get up and going because they want to put GPS in each vehicle and privacy groups don't like that.

Mercedes developed a system for their cruise control that keeps you at a constant distance from the car in front of you, same kind of logic.

    my thoughts exactly

or worse yet, the software for that system glitches (we all have computers, we all know it can happen) and your car suddenly stops in the middle of a freeway.

This is a disaster waiting to happen IMHO

There are a lot of good points if you read down the page. I don't like the idea.

What happens when the car decides to apply enough braking power to get you stopped just in time, then a little kid chases their ball into the road? You don't have enough braking power left to stop.

What if the sensor "sees" a bag or some trash flying towards it? No substitute for an attentive driver.
