I have an 87 V20 /forums/images/graemlins/burb.gif. Diesel, TH400, NP208. It no longer has 3rd gear (slips bad) and reverse chatters horribly. A local trans shop quoted me $825 /forums/images/graemlins/deal.gif for a rebiuld (installed) w/ 15 month warranty. I'm used to paying $350 for a car TH400. He said it's because it's a diesel. Is this a fair price?

The TH400 itself is the same animal. I think the diesel uses a different torque converter.

    I was quoted $575 CDN for a dyno-tested replacement for mine from a reputable high-volume shop - albeit for a 2wd.

$825 US installed doesn't sound too wild.

No, for a 400 in the US it's too much, if he is just rebuilding it.
If he is putting a shift improvement kit and tweaking it then you are close, I was quoted 750 for a performance rebuild.

It does use a different torque converter which he said added to the price and he did say something about a shift kit. I am however gonna check out that Summit trany /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif thanks hammer

I just replaced the torque converter in my 700R4. . Gas was only $100. Diesel version cost $200. Ouch! /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Watch out. I went through 2 TCI 700R-4 Street Fighters in a firebird. Its *STOCK* 305 was too much motor for those POS trannys. Funny that the original tranny lasted about 80K miles but the TCI units failed at 300 and 1500 miles. They warrantied the tranny each time, but it took those b@st@rds over a month each time to get it back to me.
