If that 76 chevy has a full floater rear, I'd go that way. Its either gonna be a D44 or D60 up front, and probably has an engine/tranny/transfercae too.

<font color="green"> It's almost definately a FF in a truck that old. The front will be a D44 though, the D60s did not show up on CHevys until '77. You can tell if it's a FF for sure if it looks like this -

Look at the hubs. The axleshaft is actually bolted to the hub. It will look way different than a semi-floater. Also, look at the pumpkin. That big honking diamond shaped pumpkin is the sign of a FF 14 bolt. (the semi-floating 14 has 14 bolts, but the diff lookes more round)

If the 76 is definately a 76, then it is more than likely a D44 since they didn't start with 60's until 77..... BUt GM may have snuck a few in early..??..??...

Go with the best deal that has the axles in the best condition.

no thanks the only way I'll probably get a d60 is to buy a beater and get lucky.

My girlfriend can help on the second part. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I have seen a couple 14bff's in the local u-pull-its. I saw 4 or so in the Ecology yard. A couple were van, and a couple truck. One was a 4x4 with a D44 front (warn standard hubs) &amp; 14bff rear. The U-Pull-It down the street had 2 that I saw also. I don't know the ratio's or carrier in them. I really didn't look too close as I already have my 14bff &amp; 8 lug 10 bolt, so I wasn't really interested. I know the second yard wanted $178 for an axle assembly though. Only thing is you have to go pull it out.

I also know a guy that has a 3/4 ton 2wd for sale. $150. It has no steering column, and would have to be towed on a trailer or wrecker. But is has the 2wd steering box for xover, and a 14bff rear (don't know ratio or carrier). You could probably sell other parts off the truck and make you $150 back.

Being reliable is a major goal for mine. I like to hit the back wood trails that don't see much use. So The mods I'd recomened would be: 3/4 Ton axles (cheaper then 1 Ton, but 1 Ton is better) and either a 4" or 6" suspension lift, and 33" to 36" tires. Now I don't know how you feel about trimming fenders, so I'll leave that one alone. That'll get ya out in the woods. /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif
