I currently am running stock D44sf front and 12 bolt sf rear with stock gears (3.08's now, want at least 4.10's) under a 1/2t suburban (full time 4wd w/NP203). What I wanna do is put a complete set of 3/4t axles under it. What should i start looking for, and will I have to convert my t-case, or did 3/4t's come with full time 4wd with np203's?

well first your front end is a FF, all front axles are, look at the end/hub area of your rear end, see there is no big hub sticking out. now look at the front, there's a hub there. the hub carries all the weight on a FF and on a SF the axle shaft carries it all.

to go 3/4 ton you should look for at least an 8-lug 14bolt SF and an 8-lug front D44 or 10 bolt. the D44 and 10B aren't much different at all. but try to get a 14 bolt FF rear.

don't know about the case, my 3/4 sub has an NP241 in it which is part time.

Hey, im gettin ready to put my axles in. i have a '79 with the 10b and 12b. i got my 3/4 axles(d44ff,14bff) from a guy on this site that pulled them from a 78 3/4 p/u. i got those, np203, th350, and alot of misc. parts for $150. the main thing u will hafta do is get new u-bolts, and a conversion u joint which is like $27 at napa. ill b putting mine on shortly. there are also a few other little things that u will need. just figure out as u go along.

Why in the hell would chevy put a full float in the front a and a semi float in the rear? Seems dumb if you ask me.

All steering axles are full floaters, it's the nature of the beast. There is no way to make an axle that steers that is not a full floater.

Probably because a semifloater is a lot cheaper to make, and a 1/2 ton doesn't really need the strength of a full floater..

Depends on if you already have large tires and rims and want to shell out more cash to change to 8 lug rims if you do the 14FF swap. /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

There was never a factory 12 bolt FF made, and it will cost like $800 to convert a SF to a FF, so I'd go with the 14 bolt. You should be able to pick up a 14 bolt in great shape for $250 tops, add a Detroit for $330 and you'll have a great axle.

My next question then with my 1/2 ton with D44/12bolt with 3.07's...I want to upgrade to 3/4 ton with 4.10's and I want to leave it full time 4wd...I know i can get a 12b 3/4ton with 4.10's, but does the D44 4.10's come in 3/4ton?

read my last post, except replace 12b with 14bolt..I want a 14 not a 12, also, just thought of something, since I have a 12bsf on now, and I'll be going to a 14b ff, how much of the driveline will i have to change (oh t-case is np203).
