I can't get the matting surface clean. Still see the out line of the old gasket and when I wipe it with thinner there is some kind of black residue still there, but very hard to see. Does it need to be that clean?? Any help would be appreciated. Mike

I would say if you can feel it with your fingernail, you aren't done. Metal will discolor, so if its discoloration, no problem. But if its left over gasket material, get yourself a thin putty knife, and go to town.
