When I was promoted to forman my boss let me know that I was going to be responsible for hireing help when I needed it.

Well next week I am going to need some workers. I have this guy I know coming by the last couple of weeks looking for work. He knew that I needed help soon and put his name on my list to be hired. I told hime last week that it would be a week and a half befor I called him in. Today a buddy of mine came in looking for work, he's been off before Christmas and I told him I would talk to the boss and see if I could get him on but I said it looks pretty good that I would be able to.

Well today about an hour after I talked to my bud my boss tells me he hired two guy's and they will be coming in next week. I feel like crap. I know that I could'nt have stoped this from happening but still feel like sh*t.

Now I have to call up both of these guy's and tell them that I don't have work for them. I will try to let them know the circumstances behind what happened.

    I need a beer.

Yeah, that extra 5k a year can buy some aspirin and hair coloring.:(

Te main reason I took the promotion was that I hoped to have more stability in working consistantly.

I know that I will pull through this, but it still sucks.

Well I just called up my buddy and let him know that I had a full crew.:(

He was my partiner for 6 months a couple of years ago. This guy is soo cool. He's been off of work for 3 months and he is trying to make me feel better because I can't hire him.:o

I need to make this right with him sometime in the future.:o

You should ask your boss if any authority comes with that responsibility..

Did you ask him why he hired two guys after he told you that staffing was up to you?

You should at least tell him you did what he asked and had two guys lined up,and that he needs to coordinate with you.

Granted, he's your boss, but you should establish some equality with him, or you're in for a long career.

Hope you aren't stuck with a boss who tells you to do something, does it all himself anyway, then hollers at you when things don't work out.

Hiring/firing certaintly ain't the fun part of being in charge. Sounds like you an d your boss need to have a better line of communication.

    I love being boss!!!!

Being a boss comes with my own set of ground rules....

    #1 never hire family
    #2 never hire friends
#3 look at my employees as "units of labor"-when I fire one or one quits my motto is :"IF HE DIED I'D HAVE TO REPLACED HIM ANYWAY'S"

Makes my life a whole lot simpler,,,,,

The lay-off part is'nt hard, being in construction it comes with the job, but I would rather send them to another job location to keep them working. The company I work for is #24 in revinue in the USA so they do have multiple jobs running and more of an opportunity to contimue working.

I presume that I'm in a 'noob' state as far as the management thing, so they may have thought that they were helping me out with this thing.

    I need more controll.:D
