Ok, I now understand the valve seal deal.
So my uncle was rattling off all this info and just left me in the dust.
So get #1 at TDC buy looking at number 6 to see when it starts the move. This is when I "know" for sure that Im at TDC, then tighten them down till they are not giggling anymore and then 1/2 turn more? Does this sound right? Or did I miss some good info in there somewhere?
Then go on the #8 and so forth?

Still hoping the GOV'T will ban the use of loud stereos with RAP music. [IMG]

I've spent a LOT of time under the hoods of various vehicles over the years, but I've yet to hear any valve train parts giggling! [IMG]

Seriously, with the lifter on the base circle of the cam, spin the pushrod between your fingers as you tighten up the adjuster nut on the rocker arm. Stop when you feel the pushrod just begin to get hard to spin. Tighten the adjusting nut another 1/2 turn. Now you're ready to move on to the next valve. [IMG]

Giggle wiggle, same thing. [IMG]
Do I still need to get each piston to top dead center?
And how hard is "starts to get hard to spin"?

As long as the lifter is on the base circle of the cam you're fine. I seem to recall you can do half the valves at #1 TDC and the other half at #6.
With the motor at #1 TDC you can adjust:
Exhaust...1,3,4,8
Intake....1,2,5,7
Now turn the motor one full revolution...which should be #6 TDC. Now adjust:
Exhaust...2,5,6,7
Intake...3,4,6,8

You should lightly spin the push rod in between your fingers as you tighten the rocker in question. You'll feel some resistance to rotation when you reach zero lash...from that point turn the adjusting nut 1/4 to 1/2 turn more.

Just a question for the books. Is the duration of a cam ever long enough so that you cant adjust half the valves while the engine is at TDC of the compression and the other half at TDC of the exaust stroke (for the number1 cylinder). (Just as Trusty was describing) Theoreticaly you could have a large enough cam with a long enough duration to where the lifter on many of those valves would not be on the base circle of the cam. Right? And if so, about how large does the cam have to be in a SB for this to be true?

When all else fails... Check the blinker fluid.

I did mine like I described and my cam has 260 degrees advertised duration...

If you want to spend all day finding TDC for every cylinder though I guess that's up to you[IMG]

Like you don't believe Renee or sumthin? He is not gonna steer ya wrong I wouldn't thi nk. I have built small blocks and that is the way it is done. If you want to get a degreeing wheel and degree the cam and do the adjustments that way is fine too and VERY time consuming. There is a base circle to all cams and never seen so much overlap that would simply throw off a base circle to the point you couldn't manually adjust valves. Not even in racing cams with .300+ duration and valve lash set with feller guages. I don't understand what it is that you are asking then about base circle and not being able to manually set up valve sequences. if that doesn't answer the question.

It's quite straight forward...if it makes you feel any better I cribbed the procedure out of my Chilton's manual.[IMG][IMG]

I didn't aks the question, I was just following up on dudes comment. It sorta sounds feesable, but Im not a true gear head, I just have an imapt ability to get myself in the positions to make myself figure things out nad by all means I will find out, the hard way or the easy way. So I was just asking questions, trying to pry more info out of all you spoiled picture whores. [IMG]

Start by getting those rockers not engaged to be 1/8th turn past loose. Theres plenty of info above on how to get there, Then...
You can purchase for dirt cheap ( 8 - 12 bucks at any napa)a set of oil squirt clips that fit on each of your stock rockers which prevent them from squirting oil everywhere. Leave the valve cover off and start the engine. With the engine idling (dont rev it or it will get oil everywhere) take a socket to each rocker and loosen it untill it ticks. Now tighten it very slowly untill it barely stops ticking and then slowly a 1/4 to 1/2 turn more. I usually use only 1/4 turn as some lifters allow you to steal a little lift here but its all conjecture really. Repeat this step for each valve. Button it back up and repeat this for the other side. Youre done.
All the old timers at the drag strip do it that way, they've got me doing it that way and frankly its easy and works like a champ every time. Good luck!

I started with nothing and I still have most of that left! - Pictures
