so i figure that by new years I'll have at least $5000 saved up. So my delma..... I'm looking for around 400 HP and 450 TQ
Also i need it to be TBI or TBI. I have to pass the California emmitions /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
Small Block GM good wrench replacment stock motor and whipple
Small block hopped up to put out the power i want
    Big block hopped up

I realize i will need a new tranny, that will come in about 2 months after the motor. so for what its worth i'd like all options. I know small block = lighter and cheaper parts and big block = heavier, better low end TQ and more expensive.

Just throw out the idea of supercharging a stock Goodwrench motor. IMO, a motor should be built specifically for supercharging if that is the goal. That means low compression forged pistons to go with the rest of the forged bottom end, a good balance job, and the biggest set of heads that the budget will tolerate.

What is the goal for use of this truck? Why do you want all that power?

In your case a big block would probably be your best bet...but I don't know if that'd pass emissions or not.

I know that a hot small block would be a blast, but if low speed off roading is in your future, that'd be a definite no go.

my uses for the next 2 1/2 years will be for DD about 85% but after that switched and 85% offroad. So i just have the $ and need a new motor anyway (mines becoming such a dog) so i figured why not get the power i'm lacking

Why not get the power you're lacking?

Simple, it's hard to do with EFI. Low end torque is easy to make with EFI because that's what it's great for. To get it to breathe over 5,000 RPM to make that kind of peak HP might be a little harder.

Since I put my 454 TBI in my truck I could never put a 350 back in there...

A Comp XE 268 is not emissions legal. I doubt it'd pass in CA even if it didn't lope.

ive passed with a crane 276/284 cam which I believe is bigger than the xe 268, as long as everything else is working good should have no problem

    Just my 2 cents

Chevy crate HT (High Torque) 383. That might not quite get you there in HP but you will pass your torque expectations. www.sdpc2000.com You can check there to see it and other options plus if you want more info on it pm me and I will try to find the Hot Rod article on it with the dino charts and scan it off for you.

SAVE ANOTHER $5K AND GET THE RAMJET 502 F/ GM PERFORMANCE. Or, check out the 383 from GM as well. If I had 5 grand for a motor, 454 or 400 would be good for me. There's a lot out htere for 5k.

no one will be able to tell what you got on the insides. most places around me, for smog, are worried about the visual, since you can tune a decent vehicle to pass. I'm mission the "stove pipe" and that's it. so i failed. it sniffed clean (leaned it out) and so a motor with decent specs and the factory emissions will work great.

Why the HP number so high? more power = more busted parts. a nice little 300HP motor would be reliable, streetable and alot easier on the rig as a whole.

    I've got a great idea:

    GET THIS!!

Then all you need is some minor stuff like:

    Crank
    Rods
    Pistons
    Rings
    Bearings
    Heads
    Intake
    Exhaust
    Fuel Delivery
    Cam
    Valvetrain
    Balancer
    Oilpan
    Plugs
    Wires
    ...
    ...
    ...

Should allow you to hit your power target too.

ok well i just called a somewhat local shop and they said it was impossible to get 400 HP and 450 TQ and be smog legal /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif the only reason i want that kinda power is because i dont know what it feels like and my motor kinda feels like its a dog, so i just thought why not get the power. it looks more and more like i might just get this one that i've had bookmarked for like 6 months 383 HT
can someone tell me weather or not this engine would bolt in easly and be compatible with TBI ?

Well they're smokin crack! Lingenfelter re-did an LT-1 vette a while back with 660hp and smog legal. Also, I saw a thing where he did a 770hp Twin Turbo Escalade EXT in CA.... Have you tried calling them?

My opinion would be to keep it somewhat simple and get a Ram Jet 350..... Much as much HP but a nice engine.

also, Car Craft did a report a few years back and had sniffer tests done on some strip cars. One was a 69 Camaro Pro Street. 8sec ET's, 632 Cube engine, dual BG dominators on it, no cats, etc. etc.

It passed. Granted, it only had to pass Gross Polluter regs, but it passed.
