Big Block Iron Heads - Are there ID #\'s stamped somewhere...?

Like the subject line says.....I'm trying to identify what heads are on my engine.

It's a long story....but it all started with that stupid 850 Q-Jet installation. Since then I've been double-checking all the "basics" on my engine and would like to know whether I have "early" or "late" style heads, confirm that they are rectangular port....etc. I would also like to identify what type of sparkplug is correct for them... I'm currently using the AP145 (Autolite Platinum) 1/2" threadstyle.

    The engine block is a casting #3969854 (1969-72......396Cu In......2 or 4-Bolt Main)

Apparently, there is more than one iron head that could fit this.....so I'd like to figure out what's there.

Anyone know where the stampings (or casting #'s) are located?

    Thanks! [IMG]

pull off a valve cover, there should be a number on the head. cant miss it.. usually the last 3 numbers will tell the story..

    J.R.,

    Will DO! [IMG]

Once I get the numbers, do you have the "secret decoder ring" to tell me what I've got? [IMG]

Greg, check out www.mortec.com for the casting number details. I found those sites by just plugging the casting numbers from my heads into a web search site at www.altavista.com

And yeah, wouldn't it be nice if they put the casting numbers somewhere just a tad easier to find! [IMG]
