if you have, did you do it yourself or farm it out? price range? i've read that the hardest part of doing it yourself is getting the old knuckles off. grinder and a BFH. post up if you've done it and if it was worth it. thanks,

Stupid question here, but what do you mean by having your knuckles turned /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif

The welds holding the knuckles to the axletubes are ground off and the knuckles are rotated to gain optimal pinion angle, then rewelded on.

steering knuckles turned on the axle so you can point the pinion at the t case and still retain correct steering geometry. knew some guys here in town a few years back who did this. they where running 10"+ lifts and dana 60s with cross over and turned knuckles. seemed pretty slick.

I've always heard this was a good way to wreck pinion berings. The pinion is turned up too high to get proper lubrication. I've heard of (but never seen) sump pump set ups to pump the gear oil up to the pinion. Also, there are manufactures who make center sections which lube well at high angles ... but then you are getting into a whole new dif.

oh, ok... when someone says "i turned [insert part name here]" that says to me that they machined it like when you get rotors turned. cutting/rotating knuckles is what I'd call what ur talkin about.

I first learned and heard about this method back in the mid-80's when I was a teenager. I was reading about Fly-N-Hi Offroad Center in Arizona doing the method what they call "cut and turn", which loosely translated is what it means. /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif

Don't forget about the spring perch that is cast into the diff housing. What would you do to fix that?

i guess it would depend on if you wanted to go beyond what shims you could get. whats the biggest shim they sell? 4 degrees? 6?

Re: Big lift guys- who\'s had their knuckles turned/rotated?

OK guys, I've done allthat you talked about in this thread. On my d44 closed knuckle I had the ball ends cut off , rotated the diff 12 degrees, ball ends welded back on, pumpkin perch ground off,(using a giant industrial belt sander, and new perches welded back on. made anew steering knuckle to fit the right side to accept crossover steering arm and replaced those tiny studs that held the spindle onwith the bolts from a d60. by the way also had a spool installed in it at the same time all for under 350.00 beat that. if you need info on who what and where let me know I'll pass it along /forums/images/graemlins/peace.gif

Re: Big lift guys- who\'s had their knuckles turned/rotated?

shimming is a problem on the cast pad that uses studs rather then ubolts
as now the studs do not face the right way
recently there were a couple of bandaid spring plate designs on this site to help a few degrees of shim
the correct way involves moving the studs to the new angle

your really gonna mess up the caster on that axle if you do use just the shims /forums/images/graemlins/grind.gif

I also saw guy who had flanges welded into the axle tube so that he could change the amount of caster depending on the /forums/images/graemlins/hack.gif amount of lift he was running
