What would make a small wild bird curl up for the night and sleep on a ledge near the eve of a back porch?

I went outside and nearly touched it by accident, then I saw it. It stared at me, without fear and just sat there. Right now its asleep curled up in its feathers. No nest there or nearby.

Maybe it's camping for the night, on the way to a better place?

I found this little bird next to the sidewalk that used to be on my paper route when I was a kid. Yes I am old. I thought it was wounded and was gonna take it home and try to help. I carried it around with me for about half an hour and took it out of my jacket pocket to make sure it was still alive and it kind of ruffled it's feathers and split. I'm guessin it was just really cold as it was pretty chilly that mornin and just needed a little pick me up as it were.

Was kinda a neat animal experience for me.

He might have been stunned from flying into a window or something. Last summer I almost stepped on a hawk that was chillin on my porch. I chased off a cat and the bird flew away after a while.
