    Blazer won\'t start

I bought my first K5 friday and first vehicle for that matter. Its a 77 Blazer. It worked just fine up until this morning. It started once but would not start again. Sometimes it will fire but immediatly shuts itself off. The motor is a 350 but not the original. I think I got some bad gas. What do you think? Also, what are some cheap ways to increase power with out sacrificing gas milage? I'm thinking K&N.

Here's a couple of things to check out-

    Fuel pump
    Fuel filter
    Ignition module
Needle and seat in the carb

This is a long shot, but since you just bought the truck, do you know if your fuel gauge is accurate? Is there a chance you could just be out of gas? Don't laugh, this has happened to me before...........

Give us a bit better description of the symptoms and it might help to narrow it down.

I've got Gas. I put $20 worth of gas in it when I bought it and have only driven about 40 miles since then.

    I'd guess ignition module.

How much do you think that would cost to fix?

Your engine needs 3 things to run. Spark, fuel and compression. Compression generally is lost over time so that is prob not it. To check for spark take off one of the spark plug wires and stick a screw driver in it and hold it next to something bare metal on the truck. Have a friend crank over the motor to see if there is spark. If there is next try fuel. Take off the air cleaner cover and with a friend cranking it look down the carb and see if there is any fuel going into the engine and if the choke is working. Post what you find and we will go from there.

I'm taking it to a mechanic tomorrow if it will start at all. Other wise I will try that. I don't really trust myself yet. I have to rely on it as a daily driver.

Most of the things a mechanic will check for can be easily eliminated by you with a little time under the hood.........You didn't fill out your profile, I see- Are you green when it comes to vehicles? Well let us give you a hand, buddy..........

To begin with, explain as best as you can what happens when you try to start the Blazer. Does the engine turn over? Do you smell lots of gas? Things like that...........

i know how that is being a daily driver. the more problems you have the more you learn. i am in your same boat. i went from knowing very little beyond a vw bug a year ago to being pretty confident now. 2 things. 1. spend a lot of time on this site, 2. fix a lot of stuff yourself. i have gone through an engine, 2 drivelines, u joints all around, bearings, water pump, alternator, steering pump, master cylinder, drums, flex plate, yadda yadda yadda. probably nothing compared to half of the people on this site. eventually you will learn if you just try to fix it yourself. you will save a lot of money too, buy a book, use this site and you should be fine for most things. good luck.
