I got mine done at Plano Transmission ....corner of 15th and K Ave in the other end of the building from the Liquor store....they did me a really fine job.....the stock rebuild on a 700R is around $850....I added Corvette and Kevlar parts, vacuum plate, etc and still got out for about $1200.....they were recommended to me by a guy I work with who uses them for his race vehicle....they talked to me straight..showed me what I was getting, and did the job on time, and for what they quoted...I'd go there again in a heartbeat.....don't forget your cooler.....Good Luck....JD
just checked the #...listed as Plano Automatic Trans....Plano Pkwy & K .....972-423-3666....it's just down from the Wells Fargo Bldg off Central...
Stuck?...Hell no..I still got some gas left..
Edited by K5Jimmy on 08/19/01 11:02 AM.

oh yea, a man after my own heart!!! I blew OD, and drive it in drive for about a 120 miles, and then lost drive, and first and reverser were slipping bad... I also discovered that second was slipping bad if the RPM's were low...

I made it about another 90 miles this way, and ended up blowing and engine in the process! [IMG]

anyway capt. gave me this link, and I'm gonna start saving (as soon as I get the engine replaced in the k5, and in the other one also since I blew it too this weekend) I got a tranny out of a wrecked k5 for now. this thing is 1495 + shipping, but they are recommending this thing as a replacement for th400's and th350's!!! man this thing looks awesome Check out this link to the Raptor!!!

oh this tranny is going in, but probably not too quickly... depends on whether I gotta put a new engine in Insane Ewok! (I'm not gonna rebuild it, I'll hold out and do a 383 stroker)

however, if you're still holding out at that point then I'll let ya know how I like it, and if not then you can tell me!

Thanks, I think I'll try them tomorrow, Eagle wants a little more, but Plano Trans sounds pretty good. Will probably get a stock rebuild, it needs a TC too. any idea what stall speed? I drive almost all street, and maybe some light off roading every month or two. I'm running 33" tires and 3.42's. Will they still warranty the tranny if I have larger tires, or should I borrow a set of 31's for a day? Thanks

Oh yeah, for some reason, TC's don't seem to last very long in my truck...it got its first rebuild at 91K, with a new TC, and a new TC at 117K, and now I blew the tranny again a 144K. Anything I can do to make it last a little longer? Already have a cooler, and have changed the fluid and filter 2-3 times since I bought it at 124K. Thanks

I would say your gearing is killing your tranny's and TC's. I would invest in some 4.11's with 33's and a 700R-4. You'll like the truck way better and the tranny will likely survive for more than a year at a time.

I had the 33's on mine when I took it in....I'd tell him about losing TC's, what kinda driving you do, etc...some of the parts upgrade are wayyyyy cheep.like a hardened sprag is about $30, and worth the money....if you run around in Drive instead of OD, and don't stand on it all the time, your gears are probably not the culprit.....heat kills TC's....deeper gears are great if you can afford them, I know ya been eyeballin' a 14B 4:10..the timing on this ain't so great...Good Luck..JD
(heat kills TC's, not gears...if you don't abuse the tranny by standing on it and thereby putting a lot of heat into it, then this thing should act approximately like 3:08's w/ 31's, which is factory....I know it would be great to have deeper gears, but I think some other factor is causing TC's to go tits up on your rig.....maybe a bigger cooler?....I'd discuss it with them since they do this for a living....I got a 12/12K warranty, and they knew I had gears, grabbers, and a lift.....I even told them how I broke mine showing my azz climbing a rock shelf in Colorado)

I really wish I could do the gears, but right now, I'm still in HS, not a lot of money, and need tires and a tranny right now. That will pretty much wipe me out, the parents won't help me, and I'd like to have some money left over. I may drop down to 32's if they look ok with my lift, and when the rear end goes out, rebuild it with 3.73's or 4.11's and take the front driveshaft off for a whlle before I do the front. I was considering selling it a few weeks ago, but now that it needs all this stuff i would be losing a lot of money, so I'll keep it. I know I'd be pissed at myself for selling it anyway.

What exactly does the hardened sprag do? Make shifts firmer? I'd kinda like that, doesn't shift too well, but the tranny was also in bad shape...any other parts that would go along with that, and be cost effective? Thanks

I learned about that shop through my cousin before he moved out west. I talked to them when my tranny went but time frame was a problem so I had a buddy of mine do mine here locally.

90K%... I would say basically make sure you find a place good w/ 700's. They are commonly messed up and back in after 30 to 40K. Next STAY AWAY FROM THE VETTE SERVO! Man I can't believe the number of people who use this. the servo is designed for a totally different valve body and yeah it shifts harder then a mutha but then it just hammers the sungear shell and sprag... Basically I would get a custom modified servo (I guess from my buddy who works in a tranny shop, they are modifying Caprice ones now w/ good luck) Get some high quality clutches and stronger shell and sprag. Try to stay clear of the alto clutches cause while there are more clutches... they generally burn up easyier under heavy stress like 4 wheeling. Basically the key is in the valve body plate... you'll need to block a hole and drill out a couple holes a bit. A new pressure regulator is a must as well as and update 1 st gear spring. basically the key is to make 3rd and fourth shift in quicker and make sure not forget to modify 2 and three to release quicker of they will bind.. thus heat... thus BOOM! Also note a lot of people mistake the hard shift for binding... they feel the same. The perfect shift will make the tranny live a long health life... it is fast yet not hard... it would be called firm I guess in my vocabulary... Good luck ma... I know how it goes... lost my tranny in all gears during the worst snow storm of the year

I ran 33's and 3.42 gears in an 89 for 5 years and almost 100,000 miles and currently put over 25,000 on my 87 with same set up. Tranny in 87 had around 30k when I bought it.
The most important thing with the 700 is the tv cable. Mine was replaced at 100,00 miles. After a while they will strech, this will change shift points and eventualy burn up transmission. When you have tranny rebuilt get a new cable too from GM. Also run biggest cooler you can find. Get a stock TC. Also I never drive in OD, except on expressway.
