I was on my way to raw deal this morning for the fullsize get together and the tranny in the burb exploded 700r4. I need a tranny so I can tow my Jimmy out to the trails what tranny should I use?

TH400. [IMG] But if you want to keep the OD some of the guys here say the Raptor looks like a good trans.

go for the raptor! (<a target="_blank" href=http://www.transmissioncenter.net/highperf700r4.htm>link to raptor info</a>)... up to 600 HP, towing in OD... or try the TCI 700r4. put one of those in there, and forget the conversions.

Sorry to hear about your tranny. Personally I would go with the 4L80E. The Burb is your dedicated tow rig, so I wouldn't go with another 700. I am on my third. There a good tranny, but not for heavy towing like you Jimmy. If not a 4L80E I would say th400.

check out that raptor... they pull 5500 Ibs with it in OD all the time! it is made to replace the th350's, and th400's (or course it comes with a price tag... about $1,500 without converter).

man if ya don't do a tranny like that then I'm with Rene in switching over to a manual... would definately be the end of your headaches.

All I know is you need the computer that controls the tranny. The only 4L80E that I ever heard of that doesn't need a computer is the one that the raptor guys do, but it's $2700. I'm sure someone here will know what all is involved. Sorry I can help you here.

Actually..... for $1500 the RAPTOR comes with your choice of stall speed converters. I have had mine for about a month or so now... and really like how it performs.

I am probably going to order a tranny from Gm since it has a 3 yr/50,000 mile warranty. I may order the raptor though, nit sure. All I know is I need to order one asap.

I don't think that the factory GM 700R-4 will hold up to the towing of a K5 on a trailer. I might be wrong, but personally I wouldn't risk it. I towed a 76 F-250 4x4 w/35's across tow with my Jimmy, and I know I wouldn't want to tow that much weight with my 700 on a regular basis. It has all the updates, some HD parts, shift kit, big cooler, and temp gauge too. The temp went up to about 190-200 on the return side. That was over flat ground. I definitly wouldn't want to try and tow that up Sun Set Point with a factory tranny.

The only advantage to the GM tranny is that if it goes out GM has to put a new one in, not me. I dont have a problem putting them in, but dont like having to do it more than once.

Just me but, I'm thinking 400 or 4L80E. I think Painless (or maybe it was someone else) makes a harness to put one in older trucks.

I really want to step up to a th400 or 480LE, but I dont want to have to change driveshafts and all that. I dont tow all the time, but when I do it is either the Jimmy ( a lot lighter than stock, no doors, no top, gutted interior, etc) or my Firebird, which is 3,350 lbs.

My Dad said the same thing with my motor. He bought a stock 350 crate, and it went out after 15K. I lost two oil seal. They tried to tell my Dad that a PCV valve went out, and charcoal chunks scratched the bores, and messed up the oil seals and it wasn't covered by warranty. My Dad raised a huge stink with plenty of choice word about how they were trying to insult his intelligence, and he got a new motor. He had it upgraded to the 300 HP for $500 or so. The only problem with the new engine is we can't figure out if it really is the 300HP motor or not. It doesn't have the nice chrome valve covers like the picture has, but it does run stronger then the 240HP stock crate so we don't care. They will screw you if they can. I worked at a GM dealership, and they will do everything they can to screw you and save them a $. Just my experience.

I know they will try to screw you, but I work with the parts dept. all the time and dont have a problem with them. Also going through the shop I work at helps alot.

I worked in the parts dept. at Courtesy Chevrolet, and I heard of some screwed up stuff that they have done to people. Personally, I kinda think that they just had an engine tech rebuild a motor and threw that in my Jimmy.I can't prove that, but I wouldn't put it past them. Not to mention they rape you on factory part. It sick how much they make up parts.
