my brother is turning 16 soon, and wants to get an older BMW....like an 87-91 325. anyone know anything about these, common problems, etc? I have a frined with one and it is pretty bad ass, definately wants a 5 speed, the autos are really slow. obviously, they are more expensive to work on than most cars, but are pretty well built, right? my firned hasn't had any problems with his, and it looks fairly easy to work on, except for computer stuff. Any opinions are appreciated...thanks

i just picked up an 87 528e (105k) for $800 bucks...had a blown head gasket, other than that, it was perfect, not one speck of rust (one hell of a steal considering it booked for $3000)...i'm in the middle of tearing it down to rebuild the top half of the engine...its really not that complicated if you know a few things about cars in general..the parts can be expensive, but i found a website that has pretty good prices..
    <a target="_blank" href=http://www.allbmwparts.com>www.allbmwparts.com</a>
a 325 should have the same v6 that mine has (M20)...the overhead cam makes fixing the head gasket a pain, but its a german car, cant expect it to be as simple as a small block.
but from what i've seen the head gaskets are very prone to blowing..so make sure you check for water in the oil or any sign of leaking around the head/block seal. i'd stay away from the auto trannys because one of my friends had one and it really sucked...
    good luck

yeah, drove an auto today, and I'm pretty sure I could have beaten it in my Blazer running on 6 cylinders friend has a 5 spd, and its really fun to drive, and pretty fast too....noticed the engines all tick. Is that normal? any other problems I should be aware of? Thanks

I believe that most BMW engines need valve adjustments more often than would most SB. Was the ticking you heard possible from valve lash?

not really sure where it came from, but its been noticable on all the ones I've looked at as soon as it was started. Looking at these has really gotten me into them, kinda want a Bimmer now...getting a little tired of the Blazer.

Well, we found a pretty nice one. its an 89 325i, dark gray with lt gray cloth interior, 2.5L, 5spd, 73K, origional owner. He's paying $4500 for it which seems about right. There are a few scratches and some hail damage on it, but otherwise its immaculate, and also really fun to drive

My friend has an '86 BMW 325e with a 5-speed, and that thing is a dog. Maybe it's the altitude, or maybe he can't drive, but that car does not impress me one bit.

Some of those 5 series cars are nice, though... I wouldn't mind having one, if I didn't have to work on it.

Speaking of that, my friend's Bimmer's regular maintenance includes resetting the valve lash every 30,000 miles (if I'm remembering that correctly). That's kinda pathetic, considering it's not a high performance car!

Yeah, the e's and es's (es=extra shitty) are real slow, they have a 2.7L that has no power at all, and is made for economy. The i's and is's are pretty quick though with a good 2.5L.
