    Breakin\' nuts on U-bolts loose

Ok guys, I know a lot of you have taken your ubolts off. I've got a IR impact wrench, with 600 ft.lb. of reverse torque. I've sprayed the sh*t out of these things with liquid wrench, and they will not break loose. Any ideas short of getting a fire wrench, to them??? /forums/images/graemlins/ears.gif

Cut em and get new ones. Re-using U-bolts isn't a good idea anyways.

TRU-DAT, i just put in my 14bff and used the old ones (old like december of 02) from when i put in the 14bsf, i wire brushed the thread, and hosed it with liquid wrench, and they came right off, granted they are only a few months old. when i did my lift in sept, i burned off the old ones and used the ones from the kit. New ones can be had for about 12 bucks each at the gm dealer, and a little more or less at other stores

Thanks for the ideas guys! I wasn't planning on reusing them. These bolts probably haven't been off since '87. I've got new ones with my lift kit, and am doing the 1T, axle swap. I'll try the steel brush idea. Or else guess I'll have to see about renting a torch. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: Breakin\' nuts on U-bolts loose

I've used the gold anodized ones before and taken them apart and put them back together several times with no problems. The regular steel ones seem to freeze up in almost no time. It's so bad that you have to hurry up and do your re-torquing before you can't do it anymore.

I have gotten ones a few months old free by heating them and cooling with liquid wrench a few cycles. Not the best approach, but if it's just for re-torque, there is no logic in cutting them off.

So unless they are pretty new, stainless or anodized, just cut them off.

Walter "Zip-cut"...4"x 3/32", or 4 1/2" or 5" if you remove the guard. 1/8" thick is OK too, but the thinner the better for a cut-off wheel.

maybe it's to late, but if this is your daily driver, I would make sure that they sent you the correct u bolts b4 just cutting the old ones off, in case you need to run out and get a different set.

Re: Breakin\' nuts on U-bolts loose

I agree w/ the breaker bar approach on old Ubolts. An impact will work fine on something that doesnt have any twist to it. Ubolts have some torsional twist to them and the impact will most likely just "bounce". Once they are broken loose an impact will zip them off. The longer the Ubolt, the worse it is.

Same thing w/ tightening them back up. Fine to zip them down, but I always hit them w/ a breaker bar and no cheater and can usually get more out of it than even a big impact can.

a cold chisel is cheaper, faster, and less damaging then most of the other suggestions.

That's about what it took to do mine. Lots of WD-40, A socket wrench, 6 foot pipe over the wrench, and a guy on each side of the pipe. Kinda like rowing a boat. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif They fought the whole way too, impact didn't do anything even after we got them turning. Took about a half hour, good workout though. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
