Well I'm getting ready to head out for vacation tomorrow, just needed to pick up some parts I'm bringing along for another member. I get about 1 block from the house when I smell wires frying!!!/forums/images/icons/shocked.gif I shut it down real quick and disconnected the battery. I had some tools with me so i removed the dash bezel and dash board to try and narrow down what was frying.

Found it's the headlight part of the main harness and the one bad wire took out a few others/forums/images/icons/mad.gif/forums/images/icons/mad.gif The good thing is I have another complete and unmolested harness at home. I separated all the burned wires and disconnected the headlight switch and got it back home...

I guess instead of packing clothes tonight I'll be swapping in a new harness...

Feel free to drown me in pity/forums/images/icons/grin.gif

My wiring has been a mess since I bought the truck, but everything worked so I wasn't too concerned. I'm glad I kept the harness from my last parts truck...

My first thought was to get stopped and get the battery disconnected before it lit right up.

For all you guys out there that patch into the fuse box for power...don't do it. It seems harmless enough but I could have lost my truck tonight due to that exact thing. Once I got the main harness and fuse panel out I could see an area that shorted around a fuse...I guess the extra pressure of having a wire stuffed in alongside the fuse shorted it internally. This sent power up a few wires that weren't supposed to get power and caused the meltdown.

    Gawd I hate wiring...

The new harness is in and I removed about 3 miles of wire that wasn't connected to anything, or worse yet was connected to the fuse box but bare at the other end/forums/images/icons/blush.gif

I have one problem left to chase down...I have a dead short somewhere in the tail/courtesy circuit./forums/images/icons/mad.gif Going back out there in a few minutes to poke around some more...

Whew... had me scared there! If you have any problems on the road, I happen to know a decent electrician. Course he fixes $30 million jet fighters, but might know a thing or 2 about trucks. /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Good Luck, see ya when you get here.

Unless I find the dead short really quick we'll probably be leaving late.../forums/images/icons/mad.gif

I guess I should be glad it happened 1 block from home and not out on the road somewhere!

tRusty, pull your insturment cluster and check the printed circuit on the back. My tail/curtesy fuse kept blowing and that's what I finally tracked it down to. I'm not sure this is your problem but it probably wouldn't hurt to make sure. Good luck in finding your problem.

The printed circuit was good. The dead short was between the fuse block on the firewall side and the lights themselves. I was running short of time and patience so I snipped the wire at the fuse block and ran a new one back to the lights/forums/images/icons/tongue.gif

    All is good now/forums/images/icons/cool.gif
