    1. i was thinking of buying a junked 73 and just switchen over the tags, lisence & vin
    2. pay a fellow blazer owner switch my plates to his and take it in to a smog check station
    3. just pay off the smog check guy (yet to find one)

help me i am a college student and this is my daily driver as well . Please give me ideas or a smog certificate!!!!!!

Find someone lives in a smog exempt county and register it to that address there... then no more smog... of course that's easier then it sounds because I still can't find anyone! Or get some of that no pass no pay stuff and jam a crap load of that in your tank.... I'm gonna try that after I get my carb fixed... Where in CA are you? If you find someone close to you to pay off let me know... LOL

C'mon captain brake pedal... quit looking for the parade and drive!! [IMG]

Where do your parents live? Does the K-5 already have CA plates on them? Do you have all your smog stuff on her? What is it failing on?

If my truck had to go through emissions I'd be out of here or I'd sell it. I can't stand emission controls, and I refuse to have them.

I don't know what I can recommend that you do.

My advice isn't going to be easy to here either......
Take it to a shop and have a pre test done and have them tell you what should be changed for it to pass. If you just take it in and have it tested there is a chance that you could be labled a "gross polluter" which sucks......
Or buy a 1st Gen Blazer...

'71 Blazer CST w/ a 400sbc, 4" lift, 36" Supper Swampers, and alot of rust

If the smog tech didn't know what was missing, or just wouldn't tell you, you may have a case against them. I have no clue how to pursue that in CA, though. I didn't have to worry about that when I was there.

Anyhoo, I'd have to second what Triaged said; take it someplace and tell them up-front you don't know if stuff is missing or broken, so you'd like a pre-test to find out what needs fixing.

OR, find a friend in Arizona and register it there...

It's always darkest just before it goes pitch-black...

Or take it to one of the podunk Nevada counties, away from REno or LV, get yourself a PO box and then register it there.

I've got some bad news for you....'77 isn't going to be smog exempt in 4 years!!! [IMG]

The law as I understand it states that all cars/trucks '73 and earlier are CURRENTLY exempt, and in the year 2004 the law will change to provide a 'sliding scale' 30-year exemption. Therefore the exemptions by year would look like this:

    Calendar........Model Years
    Year.............Now Exempt

    2001..............73 and earlier
    2002..............73 and earlier
    2003..............73 and earlier
    2004..............74 and earlier
    2005..............75 and earlier
    2006..............76 and earlier
    2007..............77 and earlier

So you are really looking at 6 more years of waiting for that magical exemption.....

California really sucks about this stuff. Even if the truck could be made to pass cleanly, it has to ALSO pass all the visual inspections too. It severely limits what you can do to any non-exempt vehicle.

My solution was to go with a '72 K5. I paid more initially than if I'd bought a mid-70s K5, but now I'm completely free to do whatever I want!!!

    Sorry for the sobering news....

77Blazer, there's a simple cure. Buy a bottle of STP (other brands are OK) fuel additive and the problem is solved. The additive changes the composition of the gas and helps to pass smog test. In some cases, companies sell the stuff under a different name and guarantee that you will pass. Also, remember to change all filters (including PCV) and tune up. Good luck.

It sounds like he will now fail the visual inspection also.

I don't remember how much you need to spend to have itwaved... Also I would call the place that did you test, and ask what was wrong? Did they charge you for the test? Did you get a read out of the test? What ever you do don't go to the ref. ........

My understanding is the waiver is only if the equipment has not been modified. Calif. is very strict on modifications. It's harder to pass the visual inspection than the O2 emmissions. Now they test emmissions under a load at low and high speed on a tread mill.
