    Calling all electric guru\'s! *URGENT*

Well, some of you may have read about my fire. Here's the damage.
    1 toasted distributor
    1 toasted carburator
    8 toasted plug wires
and one helluva lot of wiring

I'm in need of some kind of diagrams for wiring to the starter, alternator, and distributor. The main thick jumble of wiring that come through the firewall is in tact, so I should be able to cut off roasted parts and rebuild the engine compartment wiring. Anybody have a how to wire up your alternator, starter, and distributor for dummies guide? [IMG] Anyway, all help is appreciated. Hopefully I'll have the truck running shortly. later

hey hey, there's an idea. Was there much difference in the wiring for smog vs. no smog? just curious, I rid myself of the computer.

Yes, save yourself the time and go find a complete underhood wiring harness and swap it. You've already got to replace the carb and distributor, so there won't be anything left in the way when you rewire it : )

Make sure to get similar year, similar setup. (and not diesel!) IE 4 headlights on yours, you need a 4 headlight switch. Delay wipers on dash or in column? Those are the two things I can think of that are different between engine bay harness. As well, the engine harnesses are 3 seperate plugs on the firewall, so you may not have to replace the headlight one for example...

Alright now, I didn't burn the whole damn front off my truck. headlight ,horn, wipers is all there. Hell, the wiring for the starter is there, just singed a little bit. I just want a general idea of how stuff is supposed to be run. I think I'll be taking me a trip to the library.

Well, in that case, it should be pretty easy. Once you get all the stuff over the wires out of the way (emissions hoses) you will see it is exceedingly simple.

One wire for temp sender. One for oil pressure.

    One wire to dist.

3 wires to the alternator. One to e-choke. 4(IIRC) to starter=one ignition, small, two fusible links, and the batt cable.

These I'm not sure of, because I don't run them, but the AC has 2 wires likely, and the smog pump MIGHT have a wire or two to it, but I doubt it on a truck your vintage.

Cruise control, I don't *think* it was on the engine in '83. Fender mounted still I think, so no wires on the engine.

You also MIGHT have melted the blower 12 volt that goes across from the fuse panel, if it was routed across the back of the engine.

Probably missed a couple, but I don't think thats bad from memory....

Re: Calling all electric guru\'s! *URGENT*

well the underhood wiring is so simple and easy to do, its best to just replace it all. there could be places that are damaged that you didnt see and they could ground out and cause another fire. Just ask an elec shop if fixing only the visibly damaged wires is smarter than just replacing the whole underhood harness.
