This is on the back of the climate control unit, and it's bad. I don't know what to call the parts store to ask for, and the guys at the local autozone had no idea.

If I understand correctly this cameoff the back of the control head (the thing on the dash that you move to select AC Max, Norm, Bi, Vent etc.). I don't reconize it as being from the '70s, but either way it is the vacuum selector switch. Most parts houses don't carry them. I've only found them at O'riellie's and Car Quest do. Most of the time it is a dealer, junkyard, or restoration store part.

    Hope this helps.

The guys at Autozone had no idea because that is a dealer only part. You're not going to find that at any parts store.

yes, that helps out greatly. I am going by carquest tomorrow to pick up a new evaporater, so I'll bring it along. Can't wait to have AC in the beast!

The part number is what you see on the unit, 340427 or 340428. Chances are you won't find it new. I found mine at a salvage yard. 74 to 77 chevy truck with A/C.
Why do you think it is bad.

there is a dead spot in the a/c controls, and sometimes when you slide to AC you can hear the compressor clutch engage, sometimes it doesn't. If you wiggle the switch it will work.
