Can ya\'ll give me some common symptoms of a blown ring?

Okay, the truck has been using oil like crazy. She had sat for a while (a year or two) before I bought her. Nick took her out on the highway and limped her home with a dead cylinder and smoke blowing out the back. [IMG]. Nick is gonna pull the plugs out and look at them (he's on vacation...he has all day to play [IMG]). I'll post an update on the plugs later....but please help [IMG].

I've got a mind like a . . . a . . . what's that thing called?

Unfortunately, what you said, blowing smoke (white) and drinking up oil are definately symptoms of blown rings. You'll probably want to open her up and do an inspection.

The sure fire way to go is pull out the plugs and do a compression test on each cylinder... if one is way down squirt in some oli and see if it goes way up... if does rings are shot in that one... otherwise it would be in the heads and/or gasket.

I think you should also be able to smell fuel in the oil too, but I can't remember. And a compression test will help you find exactly which one(s) it is.

I never tried this or heard of it being done, but I was just thinking if you don't have a compression tester; I wonder if you could pull the coil wire to stop spark, then choke it, and crank it for a little bit. Then pull all the plugs and see if any have more oil on them than when he just checked them, unless you could tell without even cranking it.
I'm just thinking out loud, though, I never tried and it may be a really stupid idea. I don't know what that might do with your headers, cat, valves, or whatever. Hopefully someone will post an opinion on this (without yelling at me again, lol).
But then, since Nick works at Napa, you guys probably have better tools than any of us!!

But, you know, I would have to guess the bad cylinder's plug would be real fouled out.

Would a closed up breather do the same thing?

Maybe it's time to upgrade to that 383...

*banging head on desk*

I have a compression tester. I'm hoping that if I replace the plug(s) then it will be good to go for a little longer and just keep replacing those until I can get a new motor in it (yes....383 [IMG]). But the cylinder went dead and then started blowing smoke out the back real bad like a toasted ring...not just bad. *sigh* I bet if I was driving her she would be okay. [IMG].

LOL!! You sound like my wife whenever something's wrong with her car...

Maybe capt's right, maybe it's just a head gasket or warped head.
Good Luck!! Keep us posted..

What color was the smoke??? If it was white then that is anti-freeze/water. If it was black then it is fule and if it was blue, then it is oil........

I would do the compression test and see what shows up. If it shows fine, see if you can get a leak down test done. Or you could pull the head and see what is up down there.... Seeif the head gasket has any indicators on it of a bad gasket. If it does look like a head gasket, have the head checked ot make sure it isn't warped and also check the block...

One other thing, when you pulled the plug, was it covered in oil??

When engines go from sitting for long periods to being used regularly, the rings wear out quickly. This is what happened to me. Get a compresion gauge (threads in the plug holes) and do a compresion test. Unplug the coil (so the motor wont start), thread the guage in the plug hole and crank it over 4 turns or so while watching the guage. Now, add a few drops of oil to the cylinder (to seal the rings) and do it again. If the compresion is a lot higher the second time you have bad rings. Reapeat on each cylinder.

do a compresion test and like said befor if one is way low then put some oil in it if it goes back up it is the rings if not it will be the head or gasket from seting so long it could be rings or the gasket

check for blow by. remove the oil cap and pcv valve, if you get some air/oil blowing out of there, most likely it's your rings.

Ya...a 383 is good. The one I can get a good deal on is in the neighborhood 375-400hp 475 ft/lbs. Wee!!!

I've got to go do a garage sale and buy lots of balogna sanwich meat [IMG]. Maybe sell my body to science....

Thanks for all ya'll's help!

My motor is 3 months old and I think I've got a round cam lobe, so don't feel so bad.
