Wow, that was crazy. The thing sounded really good all the way until the end.

But, all I have to say is...their goal was to run the thing until it died, and no one was standing there with a fire extinguisher? /forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shame.gif

A rotary engine does not have a crankshaft or pistons. Our engines turn reciprocating motion into rotating motion. A rotary engine is always rotating.

The triangle thing is what spins. You can see the two larger chambers and the small one is the compression. These engines have absolutly no torque.

thats why they are used on tiny cars

    i thought gearing created tourqe?

is this why electric motors suck?

Gearing does multiply torque, but theres only so much gear you can use. Electric motors have max torque at 0 rpm and goes down as RPM increases. Electric motors are perfect for that reason for cars...stop...go...stop...go...

The Piston driven internal combustion engine is based off the "Otto" cycle.
Where there are 4 seprate strokes, one each for intake, compression, power and exhaust.
The Rotory engine is the lazy man's "Otto" cycle, on crack.

Doesn't a rotary engine run on the "Wankel" cycle, hence the name "Wankel engine"?
Or is that only certain rotary-type engines?

I was just B.S.ing my way through that, trying to figure out how to put "Otto on crack" - and some how make it make sense.

I think the Winkle engine still applies the Otto therory of operation. Still has 4 independent "strokes".

i had an 87 that lasted 1800 miles on one rotor and i routinely ran it into the low 8s to get some power out of it. 9k is nothing for a motor that only rotates. racing beat, the summit of the wankel world, makes a high end motor capable of sustained runs in the 13k range for drag racing.
