I have a 3/4 ton D44. I want to swap to a limited slip carrier before I put it in. It has 4.10 gears. Can I complete this swap using the existing ring and pinion (and without removing the pinion gear)? I know I'd probably need to re-shim with the new carrier.

Absolutely. Like you stated, you will just need to re shim the carrier. Just take your old carrier out and put your existing ring gear on the new carrier and slap it back together.

Yup, set the backlash and go. Changing the carrier will not affect the pinion depth (and therefore will not affect the pattern) in any way.
