    I dont know how it works, I know what its for and that they can catch fire. Mine gets hotter than hates and you can smell it. what would happen if i took it off. btw i dont have to worry about smog laws

    If it is getting hot enough to smell it, it is probably obstructed and needs to be replaced or removed. It will catch SOMETHING on fire because of the heat build-up. I have seen cars that have parked in grass burn-up because of the converter.

    If you don't have to worry about emissions, pull that sucker off. You can expect HP gains and better mileage......
