Anyone know how hot a catalytic converter gets under operating conditions? Have a heat shield in mind of 1/4" diamond plate aluminum but need to know how hot the cats get.

    TIA

Damn hot!!! If I remember right, it's 600 degrees for it to operate right. 1/4" diamond plate is more than enough for a heat shield. The original is what, like 1/16" of sheet metal.

Yeppers...that 600+ degree temp is something to think about next time you decide its a good idea to charge across a cold mountain stream in your rig. No doubt plenty have peeps have done it and been ok...but I think if it was running hot and you tried to submerge it in ice cold water, the thing might just burst too. <pooof!> there goes $100+ ;)

Yep, not to mention parking in tall cane grass.............poof!

Had a problem with this years ago on another K5.........carpet ended up getting hot.............basically melted the underpadding............the dang cat was like an inch from the floorpan and was cooking the carpet. Not going down that road this time..........
